August Hatch-A-Long!

buttons are just pets as they grow to only about the size of a sparrow...the parents the miracle chick and its siblings live in a 106qt sterilite tub with holes in the lid and short sides and hardware cloth zip tied over the holes
Is Miracle chick OK and alive now out of the egg shell? If so YEY!!

I checked on everyone a while ago and the hen on the floor is tending to all 3 chicks while the other is still tending to the eggs. I think I'm gong to give her another day or two with the hatchlings. If they don't hatch and she's still setting on them I'll take those out and place the onesI have in my bator underneath her. I like a broody hatch better than a bator hatch.
Just me .....but I like to take the last ones out and hatch in the bator b/c that way no mishaps and they hatch well once they are at the end of the hatch

Today is day 24 and 4 hours. None of my eggs hatched.

Out of the 12 I ordered, 1 was infertile, I broke one before I even put it in the bator, 3 looked like they died at day 11, 1 looked like it died at day 14 and the last 6 looks like they made it until day 17 or 18.
A very sad day for me.
I would like to try again but this took soo much out of me. I think I may just order day old chicks and later down the road try to hatch some of my own.
Glad to hear everyone is having better success than I.
Were they shipped? I had that same problem with shipped a long time ago .or else it was my erratic temps Sorry about the hatch VERY disappointing Almost cry ed the first hatch I had that didn't make it Followed all the instructions I thought and still noting.
All the time you put in and excitement for ZERO.Were temps on or up and down? That can do it
.But I got mad and tried again...and it failed then the 3rd hatch made it !!YEY!!
Does take persistance. sometimes to get it right.and tweeks to get it right

Today is day 21 I don't even have a pip yet

I hope at least 1 hatches I'm a nervous wreck

The kids are so hoping to see a chick hatch. Keeping my fingers crossed and praying

WEll m last LO in the one bator has a bad leg Ive had this before with no success

Trying to get it straight so it will be ok.It can be done ... Its hard to keep them in the chick chair though
Havent had a lot of luck before but this one I have kept in the chick chair since a few hours after it hatched. At least the bad leg is down although it wants to keep the other up on the sling his butts in.Guess it will still work as long as the bad one is in the right position really need to shorten the cup so he can really put his foot down well on the floor not sure hes getting it down all the way
Oh also have to weight the cup at the bottom or it falls over too light so used glass beads.tapped around the bottom
.
I used a yogurt cup bottom cut out and then taped some Viva paper towel as a sling and to cover his body to hold him in or they hop out. ive done this twice before but wasnt consistant wit it and they got out .By the time I got it down with one it didnt work b/c her hip was involved also. THAT wont work I dont think
This time I am being tough to save his life like it or not. and not cave on his uncomfortable-ness Later they die if they aren't walking as the other pick on them so they have to be alone and they don't do well at all alone. Both died eventually . I hate assisting and I have to do it almost every hatch usually on one .This time 2 I think or 3( 3rd was dead) ...b/c this is what you can get My grand daughter wanted to cull it yesterday and not bother but i told her no we would try .HATE culling.

As I was writing he hopped out !!..

Good news is the foot looks almost normal VERY close but the other foot he kept up ..now ITS toes are smushed together so he had to have a shoe...GEEZ

just put shoes on both feet.
He cant stand up yet only leaning on my hand or the chick chair
Took the sling out of the chick chair so hes just leaning on it around him and standing (I HOPE) in it .
Im gonna give him some special food egg water feed sugar with an eye dropper to give him energy as he really hasnt tried to eat or drink yet. maybe one bite.but hes just 1/2 day old.
.These messed up chicks take so much effort and time though ..AND you get so attached.

A high note is 2 more chicks hatched in my other bator. A Lav Am and a lav EE.

Good luck with your chicken podiatry! I just candled all my eggs from the smashed package and confirmed that day 10 there was zero development in any of the eggs. So they got tossed. I am on my way though to go pick up some lovely eggs in person - so hopefully they will hatch. It is a surprise mix from here http://www.ebay.com/itm/130970753017?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 (It's The Old Farmhouse) - and I also ordered some Bielefelder eggs from here http://www.rarebreedauctions.com/auction_details.php?auction_id=115400 - I could only afford 6 and they are being shipped - but at least its within the same state. So fingers crossed on those. On to the September thread soon I guess :)
