Come on chickies...it's hatching time!

Warning - Drama

Child changed the temp, it hit 109 before I noticed it, 5 chicks moved to brooder we hope they make it. Sprayed them with cool water. Bator stayed open till it was down to 100, sprayed eggs with cool water before closing, and humidity hit 80.... one chick hatched and I am leaving it in there. We put a lock on the door so child (she is 4) can't do that again. -sigh-

I have eggs in there due in 2 weeks and not sure if this killed them. Not sure if any other eggs that are supposed to hatch about now will. :( Lesson learned.

Don't give up hope on your hatch or the eggs...you would be amazed what eggs can go through and still hatch. How are the 5 moved to the brooder doing? You have the temps back down and stable so that is good! I'm thinking if the chicks that just hatched were overheated you can give electrolytes....but have never had to so not sure. You can post in emergencies section with this explaination and many BYCer's with experience can assist. Good luck and keep us update! Unfortunately things happen that we cannot foresee

I thought we had electrolys but I guess we used them all on the last chicks :( Everything is closed right now here.... -sigh- I hope they make it through the night. So far they seem "normal" in the brooder! Less than a day old and something already tried to cook them!

here is a recipe for homemade...pedialyte or Gatorade will work also if you have any on hand:
Homemade electrolytes:

Electrolyte formula:7g sodium chloride (NaCl, common salt)
5g sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
3g potassium chloride (commonly called "Muriate of Potash". Salt substitutes contain mostly potassium chloride)
40g glucose (a common source is corn syrup)
2 liters water.

Hopefully if they seem normal and not lethargic they are doing ok!

Bummer.

For questions about spikes and dips, Brinsea has some good information.

Though electrolytes are good, if they're from healthy breeders with good nutrition, they don't need them. A broody won't be providing electrolytes.

Hope everyone's eggs are doing good!! Little update with all my crew: Eggs are doing good, bator seems to be set rt at 99/100 temp and 55/57 humidity. I have 2 older hens and (3) 4 month old pullets so I thought...haha I was watching one of my young ones and I am thinking it is a roo!!! I really won't mind if he turns out nice since I wanted a BLR roo. My thoughts though are I have 28 eggs that are going to hatch!!! lol Guess I need another pen

That's so cool you got a surprise early! Do you know what kind it is? It is scary mixing different sized chicks, my sister did it with disastrous results

.

I have put the early bird in with the older chicks and everyone is getting along fine. The baby chick squeezes into the middle of the pile when they lay down to sleep.
