Humidity is controlled by the amount of surface you have that's wet. A plate that you can just put water on may work better than paper towels or a sponge.

I found that warm water worked better than cool for less heat loss; it corrected humidity percentage more quickly so I didn't add too much water and see the humidity go too high once it warmed up.

I'll have to try that. right now I have two sponges on a dish with a puddle of water AND a paper towel. The temp dropped to 97 and holding steady but the humidity is still only 44%.
I'm also worried that the temp will dropped when I do this for lock down. Is 97 bad for hatching? Seems my incubator is determined to lower it's temp when the humidity is over 40%

I don't know how critical the temp is I'm sorry. How long after you add water are you waiting to read temperature? I know my incubator needed a bit to adjust, maybe as much as 10 minutes before everything settled. And the temperature depended on where I had the thermometer inside.

I normally wait at least an hour before checking it.
However, the temp is 99 again AND the humidity is 55% Woot! Still, not lockdown humidity but at least the temp is back up. I put in a ceramic (small space) Humidifier inside right where the fan was blowing and it brought the humidity from 41 to 55 and 30 minutes after that the temp returned to 99. (it was 97 still)
I may add the dish of water in a few hours if the humidity stalls. If I can get the humidity up to 65% then I'll be a happy camper.^.^

My hubby made one based on the styrofoam coolers he's seen here.

I'm in Arizona.Yes we have AC. Yes the vents are closed, and the room has no windows. Yes we're using a heat sync

I put the paper towel back in with HOT water this time and the humidity went up but again the temp went downto 97. So I took it out after 2 hours of low temps. The temp stablized back at 99-100. Then I changeed out the small plate I was sitting the sponge in for a slightly wider one and over filled the sponge so there would a a pool of water (It was hot water)
So I know the incubator will hold 99-100 if we leave it alone. Yet when I test for lockdown level of humidity the temp seems to suffer for it. Seems as the humidity gets over 40% the temp is below 97 degrees. This is so strange.

Ok, I'm here in AZ. too! I bought my incubator, so I'm not sure about those home-made ones.

Day 14 candling results: OE & SCEL still looking good! :yesss:
Three eggs too dark to tell. :idunno
Two with blood rings (a third was already pulled). :barnie
Two appear to be infertile. :he
Hopefully I will get at least the two, and maybe some from the dark eggs!
:fl:fl:fl

Crossing my fingers for a good outcome!

We let the incubator run undisturbed for 8 hours. checking on it once a hour. It has stayed the same temp and humidity level. 100 and 50% humidity. so other than a 5% drop in humidity, it stayed stable. Which is good to know.
The only mission now it getting the bator up to 65% humidity and I'll be setting my eggs.
Finally!
Everyone on the thread seems almost done with their clutches already LOL

They will only need the higher humidity on the 18th day when going into lock-down.

I’m pleased you are getting the hang of it - I think its trial error and experience sometimes & then something beyond my control always seems to happen! Ie power cuts, unexpected snow....the usual!
The best things you can work out is how to lower & raise humidity & temperature in your incubator & then at less you stand a chance of reacting to whatever life brings.

What humidity are you aiming for? Are they hen eggs - 65 seems high - I’d do 65% ish for lockdown - but have it much lower for the main incubation. Are you going for a wet hatch or a dry hatch?

Also be aware after you spend all this time balancing your incubator - the eggs will change things! They affect temperature as they will act as little heat sinks & affect humidity as they start evaporating their moisture & increase surface area in there.

I always seem to spend the first 2 or 3 days fiddling around with temperature & humidity as the eggs get into a balance together.

Yes, it very much is a trial and error kind of thing. the 65% goal was just to make sure we can reach lockdown levels.
I thought we had it last night. It was steady at 99F and 65% all day. I came home for work and it was 97 again. So I covered the whole thing with a towel. And half a hour later it was reading 95F @.@ the heck, the towel was supposed to help it warm up, not cool it down. So weird.
We even used a stronger watt light bulb, and it still wants to sit at 95 or 97.
I'm going to pull my hair out over this thing.
