I'm approaching lockdown in the next few days, and have a question. Pictured is the automatic egg turner in my incubator. On day 18 I know I'm supposed to stop the turning and go into lockdown. My question is this: should I remove the egg turner and lay the eggs on the mesh bottom? I've seen people do that, but I'm not sure what the best thing to do is. My worry is if I keep the turner in there then when the chicks hatch, they could get hurt because of the openings.

I only hatched chicks one time so I'm not very experienced - for lockdown I took out the turner parts and the turner-drawer the eggs were in 'till that moment and put the eggs in a special hatching-drawer with mesh bottom which belongs to the incubator. In one of the two hatching drawers I put shelf liner (I only did have enough for one drawer).
I understand your worry regarding the openings. I would take it out, but perhaps you could ask in the incubation-themes-area?

Eggs are now in lockdown!! Candled them all and have good movement from all in the incubator and the one under Oinky.

Omg yes, you are right! I only saw it now because you mentioned it - I had been focussed totally on the setup

It's hard to tell but one egg has started to pip. It's on the right side of the egg. That photo was taken this morning and no progress has appeared to have been made since. But I know they take a long time so I'm not worried.

Heard some chirping coming from the incubator. Assuming it's the chick who made the little crack.
