Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Not necessarily , upper respiratory symptoms aren't always coryza or MG. Mould , dust and ammonia rising from poop in a poorly ventilated coop can also bring these symptoms on.
I don't use wood shavings in my brooder because of the dust levels. Keep the coop clean and if you use hay or straw keep it dry.

@satay - we had a heavy downpour late last night but it didn't last long. Apparently we are in for a dry summer. : / My vegie garden seems to be doing well though despite infrequent watering. Yay for cooler weather.

Went to dinner last night at Laidley for a neighbours birthday dinner and as we approach Laidley it's bucketing down rain. The joke in the car was we all have to go out for dinner to see rain. Well we got home about 10pm and after coffee and cake the neighbours leave and we head off to bed at about 11.30pm and starts raining ... yah we finally got some rain... What about the other qld girls.. did you get rain too? @rexy @my2wings@cwrite @K Spot

Yes we had some of that strange moisture-like foreign substance falling from the sky last night too... We all stood outside in wonder cos its been so long since we've seen it... 9.5mm to be precise... Not tank-fillingly exciting, but I'll take it!!

Hi all you chicken folk. Thanks for the welcome and the opportunity to share clucky news.

I'm in Brisbane's western suburbs, Queensland, and only have three chickens after losing one Light Sussex this week. She only displayed symptoms one afternoon. To the vet in the a.m. and died there. Autopsy showed advanced liver disease.

I also have two Black Australorps and at 22 weeks (tomorrow), one of them laid her first egg today. Very exciting.

I had noticed her comb's red colour had deepened over the last little while. People talk about 'egg songs' but I have to say, I hadn't noticed. I'll listen out for it now.

Well I thought I'd never say this but, C'mon dust and ammonia.
Dad is going into the vets tomorrow to see if he can get some stuff (same stuff as when my Ancona's were sick). In the mean time I am going to give them some vitamin thing, it's supposed to calm them?!?

I use sand in the Yoko's roost shed. Also I just cleaned it out yesterday so perhaps all the particles were still floating around.

Thanks for the welcome, condolences and congrats, Luke.

Being a beginner is much easier when there are so many helpful folks and resources online as we now have these days. Gotta love the internet!

My LS with the liver disease had masked it so well I had no idea she was ill. :( My grandsons took it pretty hard but are now much diverted by the arrival of our first egg. Happy days ahead.

I was considering a couple of rescue hens (ex-battery/cage) but am uncertain as to my coop being adequate to house five girls.
The run is nine-ten feet long and 1200mm wide. The coop (on top, at one end) is about 1200 LxDxW. Sorry for the mixed measurements but I work in both being a 40's child.. ;)

I let the girls forage around my small back yard through the day from around 9ish to 3pm when they then decide it's time to jump the fence and check out the neighbour's bugs, leaf mulch and whatever they can find.

Thanks again for the welcome,
Rob D - Chapel Hill Q

Does anyone have any Frizzle hens (as young as possible) they are willing to sell or know of anyone who breeds them in Western Sydney? I've been trying to find a breeder for the past few months but haven't had any luck.
