Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I live in Yass (nth of Canberra) and had similar fears for my girls, mostly my black feathered sussex australorp cross. A colleagues chooks dropped dead from the heat which didnt help my fears.

I think I'll try your frozen water bottle trick though. I have been giving them chilled yogurt water and set up a fan in the pen which seems to help. How deep do you bury the frozen bottle?

The bottles are under a layer about 3 inches deep in the tubs.

I finally fished the new coop and run today, just a couple ongoing things to fix up though. The girls spent their first night in their new abode just after being dusted for lice. They where pleasantly surprised to wake to a run 4x larger than their old one and a nice pile of cracked corn which they ate down as fast as anything. Now I have room for MORE hens and possibly a rooster, now that the coop is darker and further away form the neighbours, was thinking about an Araucana Lav or splash Lav.

Pics please of the new run Luke. Go with the araucanas no matter what colour they are they are great birds and the green/blue egg colour is a bonus. Met someone recently that has bantam aracuanas they are cute too. My duck got scared by something during the night and 1 flew over to the neighbours but not in the dam this time. Tried to get it back but last I saw it it flew over the neighbours house and was no where to be seen, Darn. I managed to catch my hand on the barbed wire fence on the way back and now have some nice deep slices on my hand. The things we do for our animals lol.

I will get them up tomorrow when the sun is up (bit wet today). I have to wait a month or so till I get the rooster

, which sucks and by then he would have sold the one I have in mind. So sorry to hear about you duck, shouldn't she come back if she knows where home is??? And unlucky with the barbwire fence, I have had it done few times it really hurts, make sure your tetanus is up to date.
Yeah I reckon our animas have us under control as I just chased my ducks around the yard for half a hour to get them into the roost and then spent another hour making extra roosts and a ladder for my hens to get up to the roost because they think they are "To Preciouses" to fly up themselves. Hope you get your ducks back. LUKE

Has anyone had any experience with using Sump Oil for treating mites on the chickens legs. My neighbour has insisted I take a bucket of Sump Oil to try on the chickens legs, so after about a month I decided to take it but haven't put it on their legs yet as I was thinking of just chucking it out, sounds like a pretty extreme idea. It's Sump Oil for a car I think, it has the same consistency as syrup so would coat well and I reckon it's poisonous enough to kill any mites in a 10 mile radius of each chicken.lol. But will it burn their skin or hurt them in any way. I was thinking of painting it on their legs at night so it has time to dry.
Any Advice Is Accepted.

Think it was due to the crap comes out with it. Sump oil isn't the clean stuff went in its the dirty stuff comes out so could have any sort of pollutants in it, fine metal filings etc.

He was saying someone told him they use garden lime. They put it where they dust so they roll in it etc.
