Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I have heard of people using sump oil. I use it on the roosts but not on the legs. You could try getting cheap vegetable oil and dunking their legs in that or Vaseline is good too. You rub it quite thick into the legs and it will smother the mites. Depending on how bad the mites are you will need to do the legs once a week for anything up to a month til you see they are all gone.
On The duck front. Hubby and son managed to get her yesterday afternoon in the gully down the road from our place. They had to chase her through lantana but she is back home now. wing trimmed this time.
Set another 60 quail eggs last night. Was going to do chook eggs this time but they are under broody muscoveys so more quail eggs it is. ASh are you still hatching?

Think it was due to the crap comes out with it. Sump oil isn't the clean stuff went in its the dirty stuff comes out so could have any sort of pollutants in it, fine metal filings etc.

He was saying someone told him they use garden lime. They put it where they dust so they roll in it etc.

Lime is used on the ground for lice. I have never heard of it for mites though.

YAYAY, well done. Yeah I think I will just paint it on the roost (it's supposed to preserve as well).
I don't see any mites on their legs but all their scales are up so I know they have scaly mites. But to know if I did it right I will have to wait till next time they molt

which is a while of now.

It does look pretty nasty, but it came out of a proper drum that said car oil or something so I thought it was bought not taken out of an old car.

I believe it has to be labeled by law for disposal. If it looks clear like the stuff you buy at the servo it's new if its black its because its been through the engine and picked up all the crud etc from the engine. It doesn't start off that black colour, it starts off that clear green? Sort of colour. So you can imagine what's in it.

It would work by suffocation I'd imagine so I'd go with the vegetable or Vaseline suggestions. Think hubby's words were would you rub it on your legs? Lol

Satay that's probably what the lime was for then, we didn't even have our chooks back then so doubt he was paying that much attention :)

Moulting should not have anything to do with the mites. You will see the scales start to fall off and fresh looking skin underneath when they are all gone.

You can always get a filter and filter out most of the visible stuff in it luke if you are only going to use it on the roosts. Some of the old farmers out here use it on the legs too and their chooks are all alive but I can't bring myself to do that.

Yeah this has definitely been through some engine it's a really dark bluey black, not clear at all. I think I will get some vegetable oil instead and some Vaseline and mix it with sulphur, that should work. Ahahaha I don't think I would like to rub it on my legs, good point.
Thanks appps you've been a great help and you husband. (I will just chuck it out I think and say that we did used it...shh.)
