Hey fellow Aussies, Just introducing ourselves. We are a family of four with 2 pre-teenage girls and we are just about to start out with a flock of 4 ISA Browns at around 8 weeks of age. We're in the suburbs of North Western Sydney. Last weekend was spent preparing the run for the chickens. After reading many threads on this forum we decided to go with sand as the base for the run (about 3-4" deep). The coop is scheduled to arrive (flat packed kit) this week and we will be setting it up over the weekend. It will be placed on concrete pavers with a border of 4" high 2x4 running around the inner perimeter with sand used as the base for the coop as well. A photo of the run: The coop we went with is the same as the one in the ad here: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/dand...ken-coop-for-up-to-6-chicken-ch033/1064894451 I've found the info on this site extremely helpful and hope to gain some more info as we go down the journey. Cheers.
Welcome!, We had isa browns years ago and they were lovely hens.

Awww chickys!!
I think I'm getting over the discovery today that my girls may be boys because it means I can get some more fluff balls

It's stupid hot right now, any other way to cool chooks down? It's our off day so can't use the hose or sprinkler

What's an off day?

Congrats on the 9 AussieChicks!

Wow Teila - that sounds awful! If it's any consolation I told the guy at the produce store that my hens didn't have lice and he laughed and told me it was only a matter of time.

Wild birds bring them in. Blame the heron.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and support :)

AussieChics
trust me, I was very close to having a bonfire!!

Fancy thank you, I have scheduled another thorough coop clean on Saturday so I will check out ‘Success’ beforehand.

Really? Homebrand Surface Spray? Don’t get me wrong, I am not questioning you as I respect your opinions and advice; I am intrigued and wonder if you could give me more info?

How often do you treat them with it?
Do you just spray a line down their back or do you spray them all over?
What do you use on the nests, if anything?
No risk or side effects?

Anyone have any thoughts why I found them on the walls, roost and floor and not on the gals?

The good news, while I doubt the war is over (7 day life cycle, I believe), this afternoon I was all over the coop and picked up all the gals and gave them a good going over; only spotted two nasties on me which were dispatched promptly and none on the gals or in the coop. Still, sprayed the roost with diluted Neem oil, dusted around some more and then threw my clothes in the washing machine and hit the shower!! I think it is going to be a long time before I get over the eeby geebys!

It was funny to see hubby feeding them meal worms while I am holding them and digging through their feathers; my gals pretty much let you do anything to them in return for a mealworm!

I spray them under the wings and around the tail area. 99% of the poultry products on the market are permethrin or pyrethrum and retail for around $22 . The main problem with pyrethrum based products is that after a period of time the bugs become immune to it and that is why I rotate between the products. Both products are organic and far kinder to you and your chickens than pestene .
I empty all the nest boxes , spray with spinosad and then replace the bedding.
