Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Yes, that's right. "One flew into the chicken coop" "What cock-a-doodle-doo? I hear nothing, you must be imagining things"
Thanks potato chip won't be needing the car carrier. But I will keep it in mind next time. Haha

Thanks everyone for the advice I have decided not to get the D'uccle I want more silkies anyway. Don't tell my husband. He still thinks I'm not getting anymore.

Happy easter everyone, keep safe and enjoy all the renos and building projects.

Wow you all know so much and help each other so much I've been reading about everyones girls and boys and the little problems they have. Its also great when everyone is happy for someone else and no one outside of the world of chook lovers gets it but you guys do. I am so glad I found this forum its like being able to go to a trusted friend and get opinions that help you way up what is the best way to go about something. I'm rambling sorry.
Have a great easter.

Great discussions on the coop floor and Ivermectin .. thank you and noted.

Fizzybelle the chicken chatter on the video is the same as my broodies here when they are talking to their eggs or, in some cases, their invisible babies

As I was working on site yesterday and hubby had the day off, I caught the bus into work, leaving him the car to get some more supplies for the coop build, stock up on groceries etc for the long weekend.

As it is extremely rare that there is nobody home, we only have two sets of keys, one hubby and I share and my son’s set. On the rare occasion we are both out and due back at different times, we leave the keys in a secret spot so whoever gets home first can get in.

Anyways, I finished up and got home earlier than I had predicted and hubby was not home. As he was not expecting me, I figured he would not have left out keys for me so while still in work clothes and shoes and with my hair out and long [also rare] I thought I would let the girls out, have a natter to them, feed them some worms etc while I wait.

As I walked around the back I sang out to the girls, they got all excited and sang back while rushing to run door …

“Yipppeee! Free range time”.

I opened the door, they came rushing out, took one look at me and freaked out en masse ….

“Whoa! That’s not Mum! Panic! Run!”

So, as I had freaked out chickens scattering off in all directions, I tried swapping the work shoes for the normal thongs which were at the front door, tying up my hair and sitting in my normal spot with the meal worm bucket.

While they were eating the meal worms that I threw in their general direction, there was no chance any of them was coming anywhere near enough to take one from my hand or climb all over me as they normally do.

On the off chance that hubby had left a key, I checked the secret spot and there they were .. I let myself in, changed from long pants and work shirt to shorts and T-shirt, walked outside and called the girls again. They all came running to me …..

“Mum, mum, did you see her? There was a strange woman here just now, trying to chicken-nap us, bribe us with meal worms etc … we are so glad you are here to protect us and can only hope that she did not take the supply of meal worms with her!!”

Teila your version of events is always far more intriguing when told from the chickens perspective . :) WRITE THE BOOK !!
Happy Easter to all. Safe travels, take time to smell the roses and most importantly touch base with family. :)

so far all we've done on our coop is mark out the ground. This weekend we'll dig it up, put in posts.

Well I've locked Agnes out of the coop, she'd begun to feather the nest. An empty nest. I'll take her and the other two bantams cherry tomato picking later as a treat. There's a wild vine growing around the side of our new house. They'll get to enjoy a few without being chased by the big chookies.

what are the dimensions of your floor and how heavy is it? The trays on the commercial hutches/coops are light because they are made of ply, I'm interested how much weight you end up with when you "do it proper" with decent timber.

So light that I had one picked up , chickens and all , by strong winds and blown 10 m away. we use marine ply for most of our coop floors, it's a bit expensive but at least it can be hosed out and disenfected , when required.
