Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Fancy .... this is quite a coincidence. One you will be interested in I think.

Am currently caring for another Golden Retriever ( all white coated ) "Indy" - male, 8 years old, over the Easter time for about a week. A beautiful dog, stirred up well by my Miss Ruby a few times a day.

He has had a small eye condition - similar to conjunctivitis, but much more minor. Owners brought the ointment ( Amacin ) to be used ( if need be ) on one Indy eye.

Box says " Topical treatment of ocular and aural infections in dogs, cats and horses.

Continues with "Not to be used with food producing animals" .... and then >>>>>> ???? "Meat withholding period - ( horses ) - not to be used on horses intended for human consumption" ...

I SWEAR that's what it says. Ye Gods .... so I went looking for where it was made or imported from, thinking - 'gotta be Europe' !!

Nope - made by Jurox P/L Australia - in Australia. ( NSW ) .....

Since when did we begin eating equine flesh here ?????????? Perhaps Amacin is exported to other countries and that accounts for the warning, but I was gob-smacked, I tell ya.

Double Dutch on that one too, methinks. Would have thought that any meat export ( apologies if some of this offends anyone ) .... that had any condition of the eye, ear, nasal or internal situations, would not pass muster. But then - these days, just about anything can happen.

Besides, most meat exports here are carcass exports, so I fail to get the meaning of that warning overall. Maybe it's Jurox co. protecting themselves ????

Blew MY mind.

When I was young ( along time ago apparently) the butcher my dutch grandparents went to sold horse meat. I know a long while ago it wasn't allowed anymore. But I do wonder it there are people who are not opposed to butchering the own meat that might not find horse offensive. Then I found this when curiosity got the better of me.

From a horse rescue site.
"One butcher in WA was granted a special license in July 2010 to sell horse meat for human consumption within Australia by the Western Australian state Minister for Agriculture and Food, Terry Redman of the National Party. The butcher has stated in the media that he slaughters 20 horses a year, and is currently selling the meat to other states and territories of Australia."

I suppose others think its weird that we eat croc, emu, kangaroo and snake.

Horse meat had been processed for human consumption in Australia for more than 30 years. There was two plants that I know of. One in Queensland. They were still producing on recent times. The meat is for export.

When chickens start laying, are they fully grown so that the size of their eggs is the size they'll always be? I've got some little eggs I think from my easter eggers, just wondering whether they'll always just lay bantam-sized eggs or they'll keep growing and their eggs will increase in size.

People have been eating horse as long as they have been eating cow. A lot of the Aussie meat pies used to be horse meat.

The eggs may get bigger over the first 6 months of laying. Occasionally a hen start laying at final size, but they usually work up to it.

They will go nicely with some belgians and quails ;) :lau

Shh you ! Haha

Yes it's still exported and even sold and used in Australia. And who knows what some of the very processed meats are ? That's why I don't by it.
