My daughter with a couple young silkies

Gorgeous

Well, Beatrice has put on her own one chicken production today, all yelling, all carry on. That first egg must on the way. In and out of the nest boxes, flying, the screaming, my god. Even by her premadonna standards, this is next level stuff.

edit:she's currently stomping around in the nest box, moving straw. Fingers crossed. And fingers crossed she's not like this before EVERY egg she lays.

double edit: oooh I just peeked through the coop window, she's made a nest, surrounded herself with straw, tail is up. It's showtime!

Fingers crossed you got that egg.

Just thought I'd give a little update on my chookies. A few days back I really didn't expect colonel to make it through the night, as we were syringing poly aid plus into her mouth because she'd stopped eating her eyes were half closed and she was all fluffed up and hunched in her cage. Fast forward a few days and she is the first to head for the feed dish this morning and is drinking the antibiotic c water I managed to get at the pet shop (one I've ordered still on its way). So I'm optemistic for the first time since I realised she was so skinny. Still squirting liquid rather than popping but hope that will start to improve as she eats more and drinks less.

Winry is off her food still and not drinking as much but I've caught her very early on before she has lost any noticable weight so I'm fairly optimistic that after a few more days she will turn around too.

I will be glad to see the back end of t his rain. Because colonel has absolutely no fat on her and so has no protection from the cold and rain that has hit I've had them both in the garage. Stinks to high heaven in there now because of these stinky poops they are doing. Looks like it may clear this morning. Fingers crossed so I can get them back outside!

Good morning folks

Aaaaw fpvbill that picture of your daughter is adorable!

Fancy see, that shows you how much I know about horses .. I saw your picture and was going to ask what you were clipping on the side of her face, especially because of the sedation required. Then I realised it was hair clippers and could see the long hair .. doh, silly me

Appps that is great news about Colonel and I have my fingers crossed that Winry starts to come good soon

We have some showers predicted today, 70% chance of 1 to 5mm and there was a light drizzle this morning when I delivered breakfast to the princesses. Tomorrow there is an 80% chance of 3 to 15mm. Saturday 95% chance of 30 to 80mm!

Not that the girls and I need any more reasons to love their new digs; not having to juggle covers due to rain is definitely one. Not only is their run covered permanently now but they have a nice, big, raised coop that they can hang out in

No more worrying if they are going to be OK and able to stay out of the rain [which they do not like]; no more having to bail water out from the covers where they have sagged and pools are forming with the weight of water; no more worrying about them having to squish into a small coop to stay dry; no more having me get soaking wet trying to keep them dry and repositioning covers that the wind might have moved. For the first time since owning chickens, I will be able to sit inside, maybe even enjoy a movie knowing they are going to be OK, if not a little miffed that free range is probably not on the agenda

Are you sure your chickens aren't cats? They seem to have multiple lives. You certainly have a healing touch to get them through.

Thanks for updating.

Thanks for the weather report. I hadn't heard that much rain was coming. This morning mine were out loving the drizzle despite still recovering. Crazy birds looked at me as if I was mad when I did the wet weather routine with the feed inside to ensure it stays dry. It funny how some like and some hate it.

I thought the silkies and frizzle were goners this morning. I thought something had got them they were a mess of feathers. The were just laid out stretching in a huddle. They gave me a fright though. That crazy stray cat has been around still. Thankfully the Micky birds warn me. I get a cacophony of alarms. Chooks from three runs, magpies and Micky birds.

So glad decent rain is on the way, there's been less and less green with each day.

Appps, so glad to hear there's some positive progress with your girls, and colonel pulled through and is improving :)

I just took this of the proud little egg layer, her first pic since becoming an official hen yesterday. Didn't realize how much her comb had grown too! It's also currently raining and everyone is undercover except Agnes the silly silkie. Sigh.
