Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

That is wonderful. I know the uplifting that gives.

That's about as much as I had running down my stairs inside my house. That's not so good.

Good news about the rain - but not about water inside your house.

Now it is our turn ... it is extremely cold here, and rain has barely stopped for several days, but has not been deluges like up north.

Slackened off to sleet and very light snow today ( nothing that stayed on the ground though ) ....

It is just after 4.30 pm and the temp outside is 8°c. Wind chill makes it feel like a lot less than that.

Poor Molly RIR is in a heavy moult and looks like nothing on earth - but there she is - wandering around her muddy run, in the freezing wind, and sleet, and seeming to be perfectly happy about it all. Her two fully feathered ( now ) friends are hiding in their coops !!

I am going out now to lock them all up for the night.

Cheers ......

They are rather red. That is the problem. His wattles and comb are supposed to be dark purple nearly black. His light blue earlobe are supposed to be a really dark blue.

Oh yes, now remember advice about purple on silkies being normal. That advice was after I jumped on a comment about purple combs and said it could be a circulation problem, a few weeks back that was. I can't remember who gave me the correct advice.

My poor little Moppitt ( avatar ) never grew old enough for me to wonder at her comb and wattle colour, however in looking at the original of the photo here, I see now that the wattle is very dark. Can't say I noticed it at the time. I was very very new to chickens then.

Well, my girls are doing ok. They have recovered nicely in the main. I still have the one SLW that is as heavy as a piece of paper but she is otherwise well so I expect improvement.

One of my buttercups looks like a boy. That's one less I guess in the oversized flock. He has a nice comb though - such a shame.

Satay my girls didn't get the memo on the chilli either.

My cuckoo Marans (tongue in cheek, she's out of a cuckoo egg but is black except for a single white feather on each wing) laid her first egg!!! And I have another D'uccle laying!!! :weee But I can't eat them because of the antibiotics :barnie

Does anyone know a use for antibiotic eggs? Only 3 dozen.

40 chickens and I bought eggs a couple of weeks ago. They were really awful. They were home grown. They came from rescued battery hens. They are fed the cheapest laying mash that can be found $13/20kg bag and a lot of soy meal to up the protein. They are pale, fishy tasting, the egg whites are watery and they didn't stay fresh. I added two drops of yellow food colouring to my kids scrambled eggs so he recognised them.

The next joke is, this week, I had to buy eggs from someone I got going with chickens.

I picked up my metal feeder that I won in a raffle at the Dayboro rare breeds and variety show. I had to pick it up from the Samford markets. Someone there had locally grown garlic, turmeric and perennial leeks - so I'm going to try to grow some. I just have to build a cage to keep the possums out.

Last year my car went under, last weekend my house got flooded. My young one came running in yelling "your not going to believe this, it's hilarious, there's a river in the house." He was right, there was and also a water fall.

The girls and their feed got drenched.

I Hope everyone faired better.

Don't know about the turmeric , which is $45 a kilo in the health shop , but the chooks here don't bother with the garlic growing in the garden. Sorry to hear about your Water fall.

Silkies have black skin and the correct terminology is ' mulberry ' when referring to the colour desired in the comb and wattles.
Red combs , incorrect number of toes and green skin are DQ's in the show ring.
