**** THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CHICKENS [ unless it relates to being called a 'chicken' for not doing some ( probably silly ) request ].

Do you all want a little look at cold ? .... like - REAL cold ?

As most of you know, my son Craig is in Antarctica ( Mawson station this time ) .... and every year all bases / stations have a mid-winter dip in the ultra icy ocean ( nuts ). Tasmanians seem to want to follow the same idea !!! ( nuts ) .... However, the Antarctic expeds. do NOT do it in the nude. ...

( "Only in Tasmania" --- hee hee, no offense to Taswegians / Tasmanians ).

But they are all nuts. A lot of fun though, I expect. And cold water never hurt anyone ( unless there is a medical condition that might preclude sudden icy dunking ).

All participants in the winter solstice 'dip in the pool' on Antarctic bases .... are checked by the doctor before doing it - even questioned about familial background and possible inherited problems. They have clean and clear medical checks / certification to go to Antarctica in the first place, but this scenario is double checked.

Just for your enjoyment, I will post here a photo of Craig going in for his dip on his last deployment ( 2013-14 ) .... at Davis station. All 'swimmers' are attached to some kind of hauling tackle in case someone gets into trouble ( faints or whatever ) while doing their 'swim'. The pool is carved out of frozen sea ice by the maintenance bods down there. Massive thickness of ice in mid winter. There is supposed to be a maximum time to be in there - 10 seconds, but some push the envelope on that.

This year, however - at Mawson, there is an extra alert ( which has me wanting Valium or some other tranquiliser available ) .... "Leopard seal alert" ... Leopard seals are ferocious carnivores. Rather think, that if there is even the slightest sight of them .... NO-ONE will be 'going in'. Dangerous animals those.

Anyway - here are a few photos of 'the pool' and my son in it. !! ( they do have a warm spa to relax in afterwards, and an enormous Winter Solstice 5 star dinner dished up as their last meal of the day ) ... not to mention the grog consumed after it all.

Choosing the spot and the start of drilling the ice for the pool .....
using a massive chainsaw, fondly named "Big Boy" .

Remember, by this time of the year, it is mostly night for 24 hours, so they drill in the dark.

Expeds around the "Davis" Pool. Note the ice that constantly forms
on the surface - non-participants continually rake that out.

Craig - IN ....

Craig - OUT ( rather quickly methinks ) ...

The ladies down there, also take a 'dip'.

ALL NUTS !!! But imagine the memories they bring back to the mainland. ??

Hope you all don't mind these pix ... but weather has been a considerable topic in recent weeks ... so figured you might like a gander at another side of it all.

Cheers .......

Hehe, no not me, I have too much ' mainland blood ' in me. I spent the day in emergency with hubby ( 3rd time this week) . It's our 35th wedding anniversary today so we're heading into Hobart for lunch.

I do hope all is well with you and your family. It sounded good news that you were able to go to lunch to celebrate your 35th wedding anniversary after a visit to emergency for the 3rd time in a week. You sure have a lot to look after, deal with, and consider on a daily basis.

Big congratulations for your wedding anniversary .....

Omg Anni those pics are amazing. I could not even fathom doing that but good on your son who is quite obviously much braver than I.

I just saw the weirdest thing on a chickens site in Brisbane. The usual question of why aren't my hens laying. Someone suggested feeding them blood and bone.. This seems so wrong to me but a heap were agreeing. What do you all think?.

Chooks are naturally meat eaters so I can see the logic, but I would rather use pet mince or something rather than blood and bone.
