@Fancychooklady you weren't one of those crazy Tasmanian's swimming nude in the ocean the other morning were you? I saw it on the news last night. I know you guys like your cold weather down there but that is ridiculous![]()

( "Only in Tasmania" --- hee hee, no offense to Taswegians / Tasmanians ). But they are all nuts. A lot of fun though, I expect. And cold water never hurt anyone ( unless there is a medical condition that might preclude sudden icy dunking ). All participants in the winter solstice 'dip in the pool' on Antarctic bases .... are checked by the doctor before doing it - even questioned about familial background and possible inherited problems. They have clean and clear medical checks / certification to go to Antarctica in the first place, but this scenario is double checked. Just for your enjoyment, I will post here a photo of Craig going in for his dip on his last deployment ( 2013-14 ) .... at Davis station. All 'swimmers' are attached to some kind of hauling tackle in case someone gets into trouble ( faints or whatever ) while doing their 'swim'. The pool is carved out of frozen sea ice by the maintenance bods down there. Massive thickness of ice in mid winter. There is supposed to be a maximum time to be in there - 10 seconds, but some push the envelope on that. This year, however - at Mawson, there is an extra alert ( which has me wanting Valium or some other tranquiliser available ) .... "Leopard seal alert" ... Leopard seals are ferocious carnivores. Rather think, that if there is even the slightest sight of them .... NO-ONE will be 'going in'. Dangerous animals those. Anyway - here are a few photos of 'the pool' and my son in it. !! ( they do have a warm spa to relax in afterwards, and an enormous Winter Solstice 5 star dinner dished up as their last meal of the day ) ... not to mention the grog consumed after it all.
Hope you all don't mind these pix ... but weather has been a considerable topic in recent weeks ... so figured you might like a gander at another side of it all. Cheers .......
