Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I wonder what the most expensive breed is.

I met a woman at the hardware store that was thinking she might breed and sell chooks when hers start laying because one has turned out to be a rooster. I asked her what she had and she said she just got some eggs from a coworker and thinks they're called French wheaten marans... She had no idea what she has :p
She said she'll look into getting some more and maybe pass on some extras :-D

Well here are my new babies! (or should I say teens

)

Three of the four have tail feathers missing as well as some chest and beard feathers but they were in a mixed pen with RIRx, Anconas and Guinea Fowl so I am optimistic it was some of those doing the feather plucking and not them pecking at each other and they will all feather back up nicely.

We ended up with two pale ones and two darker. Their ages range from 9-11 weeks. Here are photos of three of the four, the littlest one wouldnt get its head out of the other feed dish lol In fact they are all rather hungry this morning, they have not stopped eating since I let them out.

The one standing up in the third photo (the only one still with a tail) is I think the best of the bunch.

Appps, you are so lucky, I am so envious.lol.

They are beautiful and when they get all their feathering even more so!

I love Marans, I only have 2 French Wheatens but want more!

I to hope to breed Marans as they are worth quite a bit!

!

It's my undercover dusting station!

I used a huge bin lid and filled it with a mixture of ash, crushed coal and DE. Then framed the area with bricks to contain the mixture as they scratch through it. Plan on putting sand in the areas between the lid and the bricks.

I screwed a tin panel to my nesting shed to make it more covered than it already was. Then used star pickets to hold the other end up.

Behind shot.
