Could I get some advice?

Hoppy (barnevelder 5 days old) has had wonky leg since hatching. I tried band aid etc as per posts on splayed leg only to find her flat on back struggling and not eating. I removed the band aid and now she's as happy as larry and scurrying around quite fast. Should I persevere?

Could be a nutritional imbalance that shows up in young chicks . It's called Perosis and can lead to the Achilles slipping. Once the hock slips out taping is not going to help and causes much discomfort. If the chick can get to food and water and isn't chirping constantly ( an indication of pain ) then I would be adding a vitamin supplement like Anitone to the ration.

The bottleneck continues if I stop them from getting up there they cuddle in the sand especially if one of the others lay an egg, they all cuddle up to it.

Because I have different coop all the along the side and back fence they don't get food scraps at the same time. I try and make a different coop first each time. If its not Lucky's coop she goes straight over the fence and makes a beeline for me, hoping to get some before the others. I think Australorps a perpetually hungry. My little girls are still laying I went out yesterday and their was 3 tiny eggs and 1 bigger egg, they are only 20 weeks today.

Fizzybelle I have all my vege's and berries up high luckily there's enough down low to satisfy them. Though now I'm down in numbers I want to start letting them out together if possible. Then I want to put them in the same coop and run.

Teila I envy the rain you guys are getting. We were forecast rain yesterday, it was so nice out we decided to have a picnic with the granddaughters on the back lawn. My son put up an umbrella in case the sun came out. When we had nearly finished it rained, haha we sat under the umbrella while the girls ran out in the rain, they got a little bit wet and that was it.

Luckysmum, I did have the raspberries in a pot away from them, but decided to be nice and plant them for us and the girls to eat, the fruit though, not the leaves. Why prickly leaves are the latest taste sensation is beyond me. You can't pick what they'll go for sometimes. Hopefully the brick that's now on top of the crate stops any further attempts. That or they'll tip it over anyway and the brick will crush the plant. Now I've gone and jinxed myself.

Teila, so Dusty's your flocks black hole on legs huh? heh, I have two. Eat all day, and still want more. Loved reading about LuLu.

I'm digging and leveling out soil left over from the shed going up. Just getting they yard looking nice again, had five eager helpers of course. The soils improved, the rain and the worms have made it nicer than it was when I dug it up. Also amazed there are still worms left in my soil that have avoided those beaks.

My mealworm farm is still doing well, they're getting larger, and I'll be able to feed them to the girls soon! Still got lots of beetles too. The rolled oats have gotten stinky, but I can't chuck them yet, or I'll lose any eggs laid at the bottom. That's the only drawback, that and waiting, but it's all starting to pay off.

I'm still battling broodies, these 3 line up on the ramp as soon as I kick them out. I gave them a light spray with the hose the other day, didn't help. I still have 6 girls wanting babies.

Sorry about my last post, I was using the app on my phone and it was really hard lol On the Pc now....

I still have one broody girl, glad I only have one unlike yourself. However she is driving me mad! I have dunked her in water several times today (lucky its 38 degrees here today) and I toss her out of the coop when I can. She has even been in the broody goal a couple of times... I struggle with this as she looks like a battery hen in there and I'm very against animal factory farming of any kind. She has quite a bit of poo hanging from her fluff but I hold her in the water to help loosen this up also.

Anyway, I noticed her bottom looks very sore at the moment. She doesn't seem concerned but I am. I cant see any mites anywhere so I don't believe that is the problem. I have some pictures if nobody minds to much. Im hoping that I am over reacting and this is just a part of being broody. She is going on about 3 weeks now

I will spare you all the boring details but in a nutshell, on the Friday had a scare with more chest pains > Emergency > Inpatient > multiple tests, including angiogram > narrowing of artery did not require stent and treatable with medication and lifestyle changes > discharge after 6 days and recovery > going back to work next Thursday. Angiogram was done through both the wrist and then the groin for a further test where they use drugs to put the heart under stress which had to be the scariest 2-3 minutes of my life; I can not explain what that felt like but do not want to experience anything like that again. Right now I feel like I have been dragged through a hedge while doing pin cushion impersonations

I do have to give hubby a pat on the back here … while obviously not to my usual standards, he did a great job of looking after the girls. He even nursed Dusty through a broken soft shell. Early Tuesday morning he sent me a picture of them mooching in the garden which, after 5 days of not seeing them, had me in tears

Anyways, I am home, I am recovering and life is getting back on track.

I have read but not replied to everyone’s posts; my posts are wordy enough and if I replied to 8 pages of posts it would take 8 hours and you would most likely fall asleep after 8 lines

Also, not skipping over and saving the best thread til last, I have run out of ovations.

You need to wash the poop off and check that there is no prolapse. The other possibility is vent gleet, but is usually accompanied by a whitish discharge. Check about 2 inches above the vent for lice eggs and if she is clean I would worm her out.

Hi Fancychooklady. Thank you for the reply. There is no prolapes however I will keep an eye on her in cause it happens. Ive been soaking bottom her in water to help with the muck but I will give her a good wash tomorrow. Can ask.. what do you mean 'worm her out'?

I agree, a bath and some wormer would be the best way to start. I think with the water method of breaking a broody you need to have them sit in the water for about 3 minutes or so, and do it a few times throughout the day. I've not had success with it, but others have. I just lock them out during the day, and put them in an elevated milk crate at night. A fan helps if it's hot. Don't feel to bad about having a broody gaol though. If locking them out has them worked up, then being in a cage, crate or fenced off area might calm them a bit, especially if it's in another part of the yard, so they can't hurt themselves at least. It's only temporary so they can get back to being their normal selves quicker. Too hot to sit on eggs (real or imaginary) all day.

Hmm, I'm wondering if my Esme might have favus. I noticed a white area on her ear lobe tonight when her face was redder. She's had scabs on her comb, but that generally was from fighting (pecking order scuffles going on still). I'll get some pics tomorrow, see what everyone thinks. I'll get some anti fungal cream in case anyway, and I've got iodine in the meantime. It could be from the weather, the rain we've had recently, making things a bit muggy and damp. If it is favus that is. Thanks to BYC though I can look up these things :)
