Yes Lilly Pilly - was trying to remember it when I first saw your photograph - then it was answered by Fizzybelle. We had one in our back garden when I was a kid, and my mother told me to NEVER touch the lovely red / purple berries - "they are poisonous" she said.
Well - that was back in the 1940's-50's .... and I think she was trying to frighten my sister and I from eating anything in the garden. That being said - I had to go google it, didn't I ?
Apparently there are many varieties, and from what I could quickly learn, they are not poisonous ( as your chickens have proved ) ... however, I think just to be on the safe side, I would trim any lower branches of the Lilly Pilly back and remove all the tempting red berries from chookie beaks.
Thing is, there is nothing to say how much they can eat safely. And red berries has always been a no-no in the bush.
Cheers .....
It's nicer today thanks to the rain but we still need more of it to properly break this **** heatwave, or else it's back to melting in the humidity. Anyway, it's a better day to be a chicken. Ezzie's on day two of broody breaking. Should be broken tomorrow (fingers crossed, and hopefully it's a longer span before her next visit to clucky town). I have five wet, dirty chickens playing in the yard, but they can stay that way, they're happy. I hate seeing them panting from the heat![]()
Hey, I was just thinking, has anyone seen or heard from Ash? I checked back and the last post was early October.

Any more hints yet as to where you might be moving to?Good morning folks![]()
I like my Lilly Pilly a lot .. it is a great shade tree. Granted it can be messy but I will miss it when we move.
LuckysMum well done on rehoming all those chookens!
satay I am sorry to hear of your losses to a snakeCongrats on the rain though, I know you needed it. Apparently Brisbane had 83mm but Redcliffe got pretty much 0 .. we are in the middle of them but our rainfall was more like Redcliffe, not Brisbane. I was watching the radar; we got one or two moderate but short lived sessions and everything else just missed us.
No nothing.
Any more hints yet as to wear you might be moving to?
It is still kind of hush hush as I have not discussed it with work. As I am currently working from home, I can not see it being a problem for them, I can fly down for meetings etc. Plus, they have staff who are based all over the country and the Philippines. Planned for probably August this year if not sooner [depends on the few irons we have in the fire, hubby's current work application etc]. If work say 'No" we are going anyways it would just be nice to do it and keep my job.
Anyways .. Forrest Beach, which is a beautiful seaside village 18kms west of Ingham and 130kms north of Townsville. [Yep, I know, going hotter, but we will have air conditioning]. Yes, I am taking the girls! Definitely not going without them! The logistics of moving them will be fun

We are going for a few reasons 1. My son is in the process of purchasing his own place which will leave hubby and I in this rental and with hubby's hours being cut back, struggling to pay an exorbitant rent per week. 2. And, the main reason, hubby's Dad lives there is a high set Queenslander by himself. He is in his 80's, lives alone and finding it more and more difficult to maintain the property. So, our moving in with him is a win/win situation for all of us and we are all very excited about it.
I have been up there a few times to visit and while we will still be working, definitely a step towards semi-retirement lifestyle, walks on the beach before work etc. Also, this will hopefully be the last time we have to move.
