Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I need some advice on what could be bothering Beatrice my D'Uccle. She seems to have sore feet. Now I've checked many times, felt her feet, they look totally fine. Only things I can think of is 1) a muscle sprain, she's bottom of the pecking order and she gets chased a bit. or 2), it's related to moulting. She was moutling a few weeks ago, actually I found some more feathers today, but that means she's got pin feathers all over her by now. Would those on her feet be a likely source of pain? She holds her feet gingerly, bit of shaking like she's nervous, shivering or something. She can stand on them firmly though, even run, she can dig, that's all normal. They support her teeny weeny frame no probs. It's her first end of summer moult too, as she's a year old. She's a little less keen on food, like her normal food. Put some treats like corn or mealies in front of her though, and watch them disappear lol. Hoping it's all just the moulting blues. I'll continue to monitor her and see how she progresses and if anything needs extra action, but I'd still like to hear peoples thoughts on the matter for my own sake of mind. Thank you

I might also spray her legs for mites. She's prone to scaly leg.

Teila that coop looks great so far!

Sorry for the loss of your chicks Fancy. I hope the hawks don't get anymore!

Apps, I hope he moves on quickly too! I'd be worried as well.

CorrieW I agree. I wouldn't leave my pets. By having them we owe them a duty of care. I understand if it was a flash flood and you barely have time to get yourself out, but when you've time to prepare, it's just cruel. Although all this wet weather lately has increased my desire to own a duck...

Yes, I hope that the hawk moves on . Sore feet could be mild bumble foot, did you have a good look at the underside. If it were mites you would see the crusty excrete on her legs.
A good tubs in some Epsom salts will do her good, soak her feet and then once you've dried her off apply some Vicks or Vaseline. I prefer Vicks because the menthol has a soothing effect. I need to go out tonight and do Jaffa feet , he dropped one of his spurs last week.
Hope everyone is recovering from this freak weather.

Nice to meet you I hope you enjoy this thread as much as we do.

CorrieW I hope the flood water has gone down now. Hopefully you can start your reno’s again soon. Some people don’t have any empathy when it comes to the loss of pets and livestock. I hope none of you have lost any animals in this cyclone.

My brother in-law was flooded about 17 years ago in Moora the water went 5 foot up the walls and the house is built on a mitre high pad. After they were allowed to go home they started the drying out and fixing process, 2 weeks later another flood came through. They were so unlucky and it hasn’t happened since. Our weather is so weird we never know what to expect. I hope this is the end of the flooding for all of you on the East coast.

appps that goshawk is beautiful I hope he’s gone now. Wow even Magpie’s can’t move him. Good luck

I hope you enjoy this thread as much as the rest of us. A friend of mine hatched some eggs and has a blind rooster. We were wondering if it was just bad genetics. The trouble with getting eggs and chooks from some small breeders, you don’t know if they are breeding family members.

Satay I’m glad you didn’t get any damage

Teila I hope your pot plants recover and your poor elephant ears. The Forrest Beach coop is looking good. Has your neighbour moved the tree? I’m glad you stood your ground he was very rude. I bet you will be glad to move away from him.

Fizzybelle I hope Beatrice’s feet are feeling better.

So far 3 interviews but all have come back with "suitable but not the successful applicant". They already had someone in the job it was just a formality. I have another one tomorrow for an "appointment pool" so wish me luck.
I hope everyone has a great week.

Good luck Fizzybelle - with your search for a new job.

SlyDog and chellejay - very nice to meet you both.

Hope you got your lawn area mowed Teila ... would have been tough going, being so saturated and heavy ( the grass that is ). Good for you that you stood up to the uncaring neighbour. Some people just don't give a dam(n).

So sorry to hear you lost chicks to the goshawk, Fancy .... any way you can keep them from being there ( wafting flags etc. in the trees ? - would that work ? ). Hope your goshawk has taken off for newer pastures appps.

Fizzybelle - re Beatrice. Agree with Fancy, it might be the beginning of bumblefoot. If it is, there will be some kind of darkened or sore looking spot on the bottom of her feet. - - Take good note of Fancys' suggestions.

And - Mouiting certainly takes a lot out of them, and when my girls are moulting, I do cooked mince steak / scrambled eggs / some extra finely chopped cheese / and other proteins for them, and add some Anitone several times a week. I add 1/8th to 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric for my Mandy about 5 times a week. Just in case she is in discomfort at times - which I kind of doubt she is.

I have mentioned her waaay too many times on this thread and I would think most are sick of hearing about her, but she skitters, flaps, walks, waddles and skips around to precisely where she wants to be - she has not got bumblefoot, and is physically as healthy ( so far ) as any hen can be. I am beginning to wonder if it is neurological with her. But that's another subject for another time - - - maybe ? She too is currently moulting which doesn't help I would think. But she is happy and totally gets to where she wants to go - eats like there's no tomorrow. LOVES her tucker and cuddles.

Good fortune to all in the north who have had the horrors of those downpours, cyclonic conditions and flooding.

Hope all is well - and that the clean up is easier than it looks.

Cheers ~~

Hey Fizzybelle I hope that Beatrice is OK .. sorry, I can not help with what might be ailing her.

Blondie is going through a bit of a tough time at the moment with her moult and she is definitely not her normal self…poor girl.

Tree update: Still there!

With this weather the moult has hit hard n fast on all my girls. They all stopped laying and I literally have a coop full of feathers - thinking of leaving them there I found one girl snuggled down in them

Thanks Fancy. It seems to be both feet irking her at the moment, mostly the right. I couldn't see any signs of bumblefoot, but I will check again. I will certainly do the epsom salts foot soak (we'll see how well she cooperates...) and try vaseline for a few days to ensure no mites. Won't hurt as a process of elimination. The soak will help making checking for bumblefoot easier too with cleaner feet. Not that they've been too bad, but those feathers on her legs are like brooms attracting all sorts of dirt.

In other chookie news, it's been a year since I welcomed Mabel my Araucana into my flock! She was about 6 weeks when I got her, she bonded to me instantly. She's still pure sunshine. Here's some then and now pics. She's grown into a wonderful lap chicken who always has something to say (the girl could cluck underwater).

Bonus plant destroying photo. They all trod on this poor plant till it died.

I have my first auracana, they are very people orientated. I took mine on to keep a lonely Coro company, unfortunately the Coro was one of the chicks taken by the hawk. So little aracauna has become a constant companion for my daughter. Bet it's a roo.
