Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Congrats wooklet on the sale of your Malays :clap. I have had the weekend from hell when it comes to animals. Friday morning went to feed my runners to find out of the 5 only 1 left. something dug under the fence to their run and killed all but the girl i bred last year,( i lock my dogs away at night because of the new puppy.) Then on saturday my puppy killed one of my aussie free range babies playing to rough with it . Saturday night was watching tv when the budgies started to go off. Went to their avary to find a tree snake had hold of one of the budgies through the wire. Lucky hubby was home and he relocated it for me. Sunday morning hear hubby up and 5.30am, unheard of and go to see why and our spotted python had managed to get out of his enlcosure and had made his way into the toilet and had knocked off all the stuff on the shelf. Not sure how he didn't fall in the toilet.. My handicapped brother had been staying with us for the weekend and i think he didn't lock his cage properly whe he had him out. So bring on the new week i say.

Oh dear,Satay, you have had some bad things happen. I am so sorry to hear about your runners that is so sad. Any idea what it was that got them? And any chance that it will come back? That's the problem, once they find something they will come back. We have a new pup as well, she also wants to play with the chickens,so I know what you mean. She doesn't want to hurt them but could, and I don't have eyes in the back of my head! But so far so good

Did the budgie survive its encounter with the snake? Are the tree snakes venomous? I remeber now that you have a python, lucky you,but lucky he didn't find some chooks or a puppy to snack on! As you say, roll on next week!
I hope you win the lottery or something equally nice.

Yes,the Malays leave at the weekend,I am dreading saying goodbye, but will probably feel better when she puts the cash in my hand! At least I know they will be pets not dinner!

ASHBURNHAM - I love your Aracauna roo,he is gorgeous! Your hens and little chicks are lovely too,she looks very proud!

Ohh interesting wooklet you have malays! I came home from the auction with a totally new type of chicken... and more than one. I came home with......

Modern game! Which I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about!

lol! Been out building cages for them today.. hopefully will have them all in their new homes by tomorrow evening. At the moment they are in temporary coops throughout the property including a hen and 2 chicks in a box in my spare room inside! I'm pretty excited about it all actually! I got some good bloodlines & met a local breeder who has some wonderful quality show birds who win at royals (he also has aussie game and malays!). Went and visited his house to pick up a muscovy and ended up coming home with a little modern game silver duckwing rooster as well!

Met wonderful people at the auction in Merino and learnt a LOT! Now I am even more addicted to poultry and will probably join a few local clubs as well.

duckyfromoz - sorry to confuse you with the name change! I also changed my avatar as well which probably doesn't help... but I am a 'new me'! lol Went from having 4 ISA brown hens, a turkey and a duck to.....

3 Turkeys, 2 ducks, the 4 ISA's, an araucana X, a bantam polish, a bantam australorp, 7 modern game, a coronation sussex cockeral and 2 geese... all in the space of 5 days! and I have another 2 geese on the way! I'm loving it all a bit TOO Much maybe.... better slow down! lol!

so which fb page did you hear about the merino auction on? I got sucked into going by the 'Chicken lovers and hobby farmers' page on fb. I love it. .. I've been addicted since I found it!

Satay - so sad to hear about your runners.. and the snakes scares! I know we have had a fair few foxes around here lately due to dead sheep... I'm just worried that they will head for my poultry next!

Thanks wooklet. I have a fox trap set but so far nothing caught. We suspect it was the neighbours dog. Yes the budgie survived thank fully. No tree snakes are not venomous. Thankfully it was our small spotted python that got out. He is tiny even at full grown would not eat anything bigger than a mouse. Now if camila our 9ft carpet snake had got out may have lost my inside cat lol

satay - Don't you hate it when you have to 'suspect' things. I bet you wish you knew for sure that it was your neighbours dog so that you could go over and give them a piece of your mind! Sounds like time for a battery powered or solar electric fence around the base of your pen!

We've had some seriously rotten luck with our stock lately too. The birds have all been healthy but we have lost about 5 sheep over the past few weeks. We have noticed a lot dead in the region too... our neighbours seem to have had substantial losses as well... so today everything is getting pulled in for a good worming (with injectable noromectin) and the lambs will be getting a dose of 7 in 1 vacc. Then they will be turned out in a small paddock so that we know what is going on. My hubby and I were heartbroken when we took a walk up the back of the property yesterday and found another 2 dead that we were not aware of!

Ahhh the joys of owning animals hey!

Hi TinaK - I wasn't ignoring you, honest!! Just put you down to be answered and then got distracted(that's easy with me1)Modern Game are beautiful birds,we have the bantams here, they are so cute and so friendly. They fly onto your shoulder when you go to feed them, and they want to know everything that is going on! Only problem with them is that the roosters are way too cute, and culling them is so far proving impossible. As a result we have about 12 little Mod roosters running around! I think that you will be very happy with them. The bantams are the most ADORABLE chickens, they are tiny with long legs,I call them sparrows on stilts! Did you happen to get the name of the the guy who bred Malays and Aussie Game?
Your collection is growing,ah well, lif is for living, enjoy them, they need you!

lol wooklet! I didn't even think you were ignoring me!!!

I have the bantam moderns as well! (well I assume so! They are itty bitty things!)... see how much of a novice I am!

I'm fascinated with how friendly they seem to be. I got a mum and 2 chicks and she is very sweet! The poor others are all out in temp housing waiting for my hubby to finish off their little cages! I told hubby he will be up all night making them if he doesn't get his butt into gear. He won't be allowed inside until they are done!

The breeder I met was Mark McInnes from Dimark poultry. He had an interesting array of birds! It was my first time seeing the aussie game and malays in real life so I appreciated him letting me look at his animals and set up! I also spent the day with Anj Cleary from 12 Dozen Poultry.... (she picked me up at a truck stop in the morning and I'd only ever spoken to her online before that! It was a bit odd meeting someone to spend the day with.... when you had never seen them before!) She has stunning birds and welsh mountain ponies and also took me to her place for a look.

I went on a 'poultry tour!' Hopefully I can get some piccys up of my new birds later this arvo!

Yeah it is annoying not knowing what killed my ducks . Alot of the other neighbours have lost animals too and the only thing ever seen around are the dogs from next door. Unfortunately the people that own these dogs are renters and let's just say they don't look after there children let alone their animals. I have had to go down more times than I can tell you to stop their toddler from falling in their dam. Have reported them to docs but nothing is ever done.
