Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

All ours are young, oldest if 16 weeks or so, youngest about 11 weeks. All home hatched. Had to start over after MD wiped out our first attempt and chicken ownership!

We currently have;
Pullets
2x LS
1x RIR
1x BA
3x Lav Araucana (Aust STD with tails)
1x BV
2x SPW

Roo's
2x Lav Araucana
3x BA
1x BV

Those numbers will change soon though, few too many roosters!

Looks like you like your abbreviations Ben.
What is an MD, BA, LS, BV?
Also is a SPW a Sliver Penciled Wyandotte?

Bit of a hijack as I wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar thing happen? One of my silkies (Afro) was quiet last night when I put them to bed - she hates being picked up but didn't mind. Anyway, this morning she was laying in their aviary, (their kennel bed is in an aviary) and she was all 'flat' looking, like deflated flat.

I brought her inside and called the vet. Have just returned and she has tick poisoning! It was on the very top of her head - lucky its been raining and her head was not its usual puffy self!

So now she is down there being treated with anti venom and I am wondering what exactly they have all beed doing in the back garden if not eating those ticks!

Has anyone else had a tick issue? I didn't think they affected chickens... clearly wrong there!

Sorry! Your Kelpie is pretty! I have three dogs, two Belgium shepherds who I have trained to race out and protect the chickens if they sound distressed - mostly when the bloody bush turkeys visit... adore my dogs!

First Im sorry to hear your girl is sick......

Was it normal flat tick or the dreaded "blue Bottle tick" otherwise known as the paralysis tick ?

either way all animals get them BUT some have natural immunity too them . . . . Kangaroos are in particular are not affected.
My Blue cattle dog is allergic to bees and is fine with paralysis ticks GO FIGURE !

He was ill looking and I thought a bee got him. I gave him antihistamine and he was fine. Two days later I found the tick still in him but dead.

I will say however, It is unusual for ticks to be about in winter, we only notice them spring or autumn.

I hope your girl recovers quickly.

Gees, sorry to hear about Afro. I must be honest, I hadn't heard of ticks on chickens being an issue either. What sort of tick was it? A black tick or one of those icky big, bloated green things?
I had an issue with the green ticks on my dog when I moved house. The previous owners had not looked after their dogs well and ticks were everywhere. It took a lot of treatment and time spent 'burning' the ticks off my border collie X but I eventually won. I had to go over her every day for a couple of weeks before I noticed a decline in numbers. She was on treatment but these guys were persistent. I notice you mentioned you have Belgium shepherds (beautiful dogs); you are probably going to have to check them out daily as well. I'm guessing you live out of town a bit and wildlife have probably bought the ticks into your area?
