I have some hens laying eggs right now (

). Will the eggs be fertile? I know we must have at least 1-2 roosters out of 5 quail, will they be doing their job or do they mate seasonally?

They might be fertile. You have to check if the boys are "working". You can also tell by flipping the quail and looking at the vent, if there is a bulge under the tail but before the vent (gently squeezed it'll produce a white foam) then they are male and ready to mate. In Winter, some males look just like females because they're not mating so they don't need to produce the foam. But if you're checking make sure you squeeze REALLY gently. If it's a boy ready to mate, it'll be super obvious.

I am getting more chicks in August do you think they will be alright at 8 weeks to intergrate with my small flock

I am jealous of all these eggs!! Even the cute little quail ones though I imagine it would take a few to make an omelette. Lol

I've only got one laying and she is broody again arghhhh so that won't last.

On a positive I think some of my faverolle faces seem to be getting quite red. Do you think that could be a sign they are getting close?

Hi Kat79.

It will depend on your flock and the amount of area they have. Older chooks can be really nasty, but then some are easygoing. Probably best if you can segregate them in the same area first. However if you cant and you have lots of area in your coop, both roosting and foraging, then the chicks will band together and run really fast to stay one step ahead of the old girls. The term "pecking order" originated in the chook world, because they do like to let everyone know who's boss.
