Here is my hatch:

All the Buff sussex are out or pipped and zipping. 11/11

I have 2 surviving Speckled Sussex and both look like buff sussex.

I have 1 surviving Minorca who has pipped but not hatched.

And 1 Turkey poult (yay, a turkey poult!!!!!).

Everything else was Dead In Shell. It looks like they all passed away about 3 days ago at lockdown. Maybe I upped the humidity too high or something? I just don't know what happened. I started with 18 assorted (from which I have 3 chicks if the minorca hatches) 12 turkey eggs (1 hatched, 1 more pipped and was then smothered when the Sussex rolled it onto it's air hole, closing the pip up) and 12 Buff Sussex (from which I have hatched the 11 which were fertile). I've heard of turkey eggs passing at lockdown/DIS but I don't know what to do to stop it.

Shame about the DIS but congrats on the new babies.
When they die that close to hatching it is generally caused from humidity problems or lack of nutrition in the breeding birds. May I ask what temp and humidity did you set the bator to?

CB, do you think that because Colourful had such a good hatch with the buff sussex, it points to something about the eggs rather than the incubating conditions?

Very likely it is due to the nutrition of the breeding birds but their may also be hot/cold spots in the bator. Were all of the buff sussex in one spot of the bator or were all eggs mixed?
Just thought I would see what incubation humidity and temp was like just in case but it is more than likely to be the eggs.

Is that normal from a night out in the cold? Or do you mean something also got it?

If just the cold it wouldn't be contagious would it. Cold doesn't normally give ghastly symptoms I wouldn't have thought. Maybe she missed lockup because she was already sick?

On the issue of incubation , my babies are 3 weeks old. I set a dozen each of light sussex, slw, coronation sussex and silkie. All that hatched were 11 light sussex and 2 x silkies. All of the slw and coro died in the shell

. I read an article that said when you take them from the trays and set them down for lockdown, if you lay them wrong side up they drown.
Which would explain why I had so many fully formed , but dead.

I am a long way from being an expert, or even knowledgable on this subject. But I have hatched a lot of eggs, through one of those school hatching programs. And I would have to say, Fancychooklady, that it makes no difference whatsoever. I have read that they roll themselves the correct way anyway. But I put a lot of eggs into incubators, any old way, and they had about a 95% hatch rate overall. They do say that you can place the egg so that the lower part of the air sac is upwards as that is where they will pip, but not necessary as they will right themselves.

As I say, I am not an expert, so never hang your hat on what I say.
