I remove a little bit of the shell at the top first, you would see breathing if it was still alive and you would be able to pop it back under mumma hen straight away.
Thanks satay
Being my first, I may have removed a little more than I probably needed to but the chick had obviously passed prior to that.
While sad, it is an educational opportunity and I have no doubt that I will need to do another one down the track and will be a bit better at it next time.
Sorry about your little one. I believe that is one of the reason why many hens pluck so many feathers from their underbody. I have lost 2 chicks between 7-10 days after they got tangled in mums fluffy under skirts. Always silkie mommas of course. Since then I always do a head count and have a small pair of scissors hanging in the coop for just such emergencies. I have heard of some breeders plucking the Broodiies themselves.
You are very brave on the eggtopsy , lucky there were no explosions . You really would have had ' egg on your face '.![]()
I have read previously on one of your posts about this and was extra cautious with Tina and her bubs for just that reason (thank you). With this one it was the egg that was stuck. It had a hole from the pip and partial zipping but the chick had sadly died. I'm guessing the fluids may have been what got it stuck to her feathers; not sure.
I did notice that she was being a little on the rough side with the remaining eggs.
I wonder if she could have sat on this one just a little bit to heavily or it just got caught up in too many feathers and could not breath. Anyway, no point in dwelling I guess; might have just been too weak.
I am lucky enough to have not yet experienced the exploding egg but have heard stories of them exploding on the nest. Yep, now that is egg I would not want on my face

Thanks all
Telia I am so sorry to hear of your little chicks misadventure and that the other two didn't make it either. :-(. Was not what i was expecting this morning.
Thank you appps

Teila I'm sorry for your loss, but you are quite brave doing the eggtopsy. I haven't quite brought myself to remove the last two eggs from the nest yet.
Thank you cwrite

Well there's never a dull moment here. I went over to feed the silkies and momma has hatched 4 chicks but abandoned 1 egg. I swear I heard it peeping, so I popped it in my bras and headed off to feed the rest. Got to the last pen when I saw something odd in the horse paddock. I got within 3 m when I realized it was the town sewer main and it had burst., so I've got southern water and the environment officer standing in my paddock , all the while I've still got that egg in my bras. I've moved all the horses out and they are currently flogging around their new paddock . The escavator is on it's way but they need to mop up the mess and disinfect the entire area , unfortunately it is running straight into the inlet. Access is a problem cause I have the newspaper coming tomorrow to take pics of my garden , so they are definately not driving their machinery across my lawns. Man I needed this today like I need a hole in the head.![]()

Aaaw, gees Fancy what a horrible day and such awful timing! I hope it improves; I don't suppose it could get much worse!
