Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

She didn't really mention mushy foods, she was more suggesting grass but more long term.

The first 24 hrs I had her separated and she had pellets that had been softened with boiling water to a mush, scrambled eggs and some vitamins sprinkled on top.

Then yesterday it flooded and I just didn't know what to do with her because where I had her was 6 inches of water and mud. I let her range up in the yard with the other girls. There isn't really much up there to eat, they have long turned it to dirt but she could get to the crumble if inclined. Just couldn't work out what to do with her with the flooding.

This is day three and I've had the brilliant if rather slow idea to drag out the bunnys old indoor cage and put her in that so I can monitor her a little better.

The only thing she will touch is watermelon and I'm inclined to give her that (not talking much) just for the liquid content as she was very dehydrated and I'm not seeing her drink much either. She even ignored the scrambled eggs today that she hoed into yesterday.

Hopefully it's just a bit slow getting up and working but at least now I can watch what she eats.

Yeah you poor buggers are copping it. The water melon concerns me cause whilst it has a high water content the chunks might just sit in the crop. GRASS is more than likely what caused the problem in the first place. Good idea to keep her in ISO for at least a week. I'd try her on poridge and puréed baby food for a while with a multi vitamin in her water.
Did the vet discuss the option of tube feeding her for a while?
Might be worthwhile to read up on.

Appps it's important to only feed soft , mushy or even puréed feed for the first few weeks. I'm not sure what the vet told you but usually after surgery you don't feed them for 24 hours. The crop has been inactive for weeks now so it can take time for it to kick in again. Some people have reported that after surgery their birds have a bilious crop or slow emptying .
I found this article for you.

I am thinking that sour crop MAY have been my issue..........my thoughts on treatment went to part of the process outlined in this excellent link, I had the idea that flooding and massage would allow her to spew up the offending tucker, sadly I was unable to make the time to follow my instinct as I found her late at night when I went down to remove their feeders for the night. Next morning she was still in the same place, repeated the massage, obviously to no avail. So near yet just too far hey?
I went as far as massaging the crop to try to break it up. working from the bottom (of the crop!) up towards the throat. That was how she got to expel the grotty liquid. Didn't know about the two openings so that is REAL handy and I will now start a Chook Aid Kit

. Sadly even if I had known what to do Time was against us.

We live and learn. Just sourcing the ' must haves ' for your first aid box is challenging .
Happy to help if you get stuck. :)

I am still putting the final touches on my first aid box...we are a little short on money so I had to prioritise the shopping list. Things with multi-species uses got bumped up the list, alternatives and substitutes were all considered. Amprollium is my biggest missing item...and antibiotics. But I got some Cetrigen aerasol which can be used on chooks, cats, humans...wide range of animals. I want to get some forceps and surtures and stuff too but that has been on my human first aid list for a while...

What haemarroid cream do you stock? I have Anusol because it was the only one in town without -caine. Is it ok?

Yes that's what I have too. Ask your friends and family for any odd tabs they might have in their medicine cabinet. You'll be surprised but most most people don't take the full course of antibiotics prescribed. Cephalexin , doxycycline and erythromycin are the ones you want.

These are the suture kits I have. Only had to use them once after a mare sliced her tummy open on a jump wing.

Just a little Carl update for anyone following along. She still had stuff in her crop this morning but only half the size of yesterday so suspect as suggested it's a bit slow moving after being out of use for so long.

She doesn't seem to want to eat anything but grass, watermelon and her crumble. All soft foods are being ignored. Luckily I'm smarter than her so sprinkled a tiny bit of crumble on her porridge this morning that was yucky till then and that got her to peck at it so she ate a bit. Haven't seen her drink but she may be when I'm not there.

Not much happening at the other end yet, because she was in the bunny cage I could finally monitor that. Just some thick poop coloured water so far.

Alertness wise she seems good and would happily wander round with the other guys if I let her.

That's great. Some soft cooked rice with a little sardine with olive oil might get her eating. A little dash of acv in her water wouldn't go astray either.
If she gets too under nourished it would be good to have some ' Polyaid Plus ' on hand. It is packed with all the vitamin and minerals that they need and it also contains probiotics and electrolytes.
The crumble should be fine though and they will usually eat it on top of yoghurt too. The grass is fine so long as she is pecking it. It only becomes a problem when it is picked by hand and much too long for them to digest. Access to lawn clippings can also be a problem.

Glad to hear she is making improvements appps even if they seem slow.
