Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I agree I just have never heard of anyone feeding their chickens blood and bone before.

It's the same thing just not at the same ratio. In the old days it was common practice to throw in a handful of blood and bone . My goats won't touch pellets that contain meat product, but they chase me for the other chicken pellets. Fish meal is another bi-product the feed companies use to 'plump ' up their feeds. It's cheap and can cause health issues in the flock.
By adding blood and bone to your feed you risk overdosing the calcium in the diet and I wouldn't recommend it in a mixed flock.

Blood an bone!! Blurgh!

Meanwhile,I think "Jemima " needs to be renamed. Maybe "Don King"

Hi everyone, been a bit busy. just looked and there were 51 new posts so I thought I'd better have a look. I hope all are well, feathered and non-feathered.

sjturner congrat on the first prize. I have a silkie hen that has a red comb and wattle and yet the lady I got the eggs from can’t explain why she said they are all pure bred. The rest are a lovely dark blue, especially my roo.
Love your male silkie. Ours looks the same colour as the one down lower in the photo. My grandkids can’t get over the grapes on his head.

MyHaven I am so sorry to hear of your house flooding I hope everything is ok now and the clean up wasn't too bad. Life is always fun for kids, so I can imagine a water in the house would be pretty cool. My nephew wondered what was wrong with my eggs because the eggs he was used to were pale yellow and ours are orange. His mum had to tell that they are supposed to be orange.

mustangrooster Yes Australia is the place to be and this forum is great too. Welcome

Fancy Congratulations on 35years. I hope the emergency wasn’t too serious.

Anniebee I’m with you its nowhere near that cold in Perth I couldn’t imagine swimming in that cold. It has to be in the high 30’s closer to 40 for me to take a dip.

SilkieChickStar Yes I think Jemima looks more like a handsome Jim.

Wow Sam that is a lot of rain!

Congrats on the new bubs sjturner79 .. very cute!

Wonderful news that your flock is doing OK MyHaven! Sorry to read about your house flooding; it was a lot of rain in a short period of time.

Welcome to the thread mustangrooster, lovely to meet you. While I am not in the NT now, I did live there for three years after spending 12 months or so sailing a yacht up the West Australian Coast. Loved Darwin, loved the lifestyle, loved the people .. hated the weather!

SilkieChickStar Jemima is a cutie!

Interesting discussion on the blood and bone; thank you.

Good news in that the road works have finally finished, the traffic lights are in and no more earthquakes to upset the girls.

As I type, it is 11C .. brrrrr. I do believe the wind last night was attempting to relocate us!

So I have what is probably a silly question …. Is it OK that Dusty has taken to drinking the water in the fish pond?

It is not like they do not have fresh water inside the run and also outside when they are free ranging but she has recently decided that pond water is the go! The gold fish are swimming in it and they are still alive. I also figure that the wild birds drink it but just wanted to check that it is not harmful to her?

It sure is cool this morning and winds blowing a gale. Thought i might get blown the 8km into town when feeding the chickens just before. Our current temp is 7c but it feels much cooler.
I would imagine the water in the fish pond would be fine as long as it doesn't have algae in it. My gross ducks love nothing more than to drink their stinky poopy pond water when i empty it even if there is lovely clean water as an option.

Hey fancy, what does an 8-10 week old silkie go for? Thinking at that age you couldn't be sure it's not a rooster either though she is saying hens. Lady selling them for $50 each on our local Facebook buy and sell. Kinda thought yikes! Not show quality or anything but she is getting a fair response to the add.

Hi there everyone, :)

I'm not an Australian, but a Brit living in Perth! With everything that's going on with the EU at the moment, glad my partner and are over here for now! We have no chooks as of yet, but will hopefully at some point next year (if we find a very nice and consenting landlord!) I've enjoyed looking through all your posts, and love the pictures! I'm a big bantam fan, and really hope for some pekin bantams one day. In the mean time, I'm still learning and doing my research. I'll just have to live vicariously through you all for now for my dose of chickens!

Hope you all have a great weekend!
