Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Alrighty guys, I'm gonna jump on the Anitone bandwagon and order some. I think Annabelle could benefit the most, after her egg troubles lately. Plus anything to help improve their overall health sounds good to me.

Hi everyone

Teila Congrats on the egg. I love the cat, that’s one place its bound to get some attention.

Satay I feel for you all those broodies. I’m hoping I’ve finally stopped 3 of them but my little silkie is not sure, if theres an egg that hasn’t been picked up she will sit on it otherwise she is walking around.

Anniebee I am glad that Mindy is still laying beautiful eggs. I think Mandy has a lot of personality maybe she like the fuss.

After reading everyone’s posts on Anitone I will have to get some too.

On sad note the little leg horn that was sick died.

I am wondering if there was something wrong from the beginning she was always easy to catch and very quiet. I wonder if hatching in an incubator and hand rearing saves birds that would otherwise have died. Maybe in a coop situation from the beginning things may have been different. When I hatched my araucanas only 3 out of 8 hatched 2 pipped, but didn’t go any further and because they were with the silkie (mum) I left them to their own devices. If it had been in an incubator I would have intervened if it sat too long. Well I will never know.

I now have a (hospital) coop and it has another leg horn in it. This one was pecked by a bantam australorp till it drew blood, we caught the others having a go at it to so we rescued her. The whole top of her head was bleeding so I put some antibiotic spray on her. Then later Bear (shepherd) decided she need to get out, and proceeded to try and break her out. He tore the nest boxes off and the side door handle. Lucky I went out to check on her during the night and found the little thing hiding from the big bad dog. I covered up the coop and Paul fixed it this morning.
Is this is a bad rooster as I was watching for a while after I took the leg horn out and he was having a go at anyone that got in front of him. They are about 18 weeks old and he is half the size of the Sussex but he got on their backs and pecked at their heads too. We have put him in a separate cage, but I don't know what to do with him. I don’t know that anyone would want to have a vicious roo.

Sorry the for long post.
I hope its weathers better for everyone this weekend.

Sorry to hear of your loss. When I get a vicious roo I stick him in the big chooks pen. He either gets over trying after being beaten down a few times, or passes away. Fixed 4 and lost 2 over the last year.

Good morning folks

We got some nice rain overnight and now it is clearing into what should be a good day.

LuckysMum I am sorry to read of your loss

I have very limited experience with roosters, only having a couple for a week or so when hatches turned out to be boys and had to be rehomed due to the ‘no rooster zoning’.

Bear is such a character!

I have noticed that the gals can be just as bully-ish as the boys. These last couple of weeks Crystal and LuLu have been at loggerheads with each other. Lots of raised hackles and chest bumping with LuLu jumping on Crystal’s back and Dusty stepping in to break it up. Crystal now walks past LuLu all puffed up and ready for action and is sporting a bruised comb. LuLu is #4 on the pecking order and Crystal #5 [bottom]. Crystal has managed to actually upset #3, Blondie but Blondie still lords it over LuLu.

So basically I think Crystal was tired of being bottom and made a move on Blondie [who caved but did not drop to bottom]. I think LuLu is putting up more of a fight cos she was bottom before Crystal arrived and does not want to return there

Cilla laid her first egg yesterday after being broken from broody. It was 13 days between the last egg, broody and this egg but obviously that was enough for the silly Cilla to lose the plot

She stood under the coop looking up, trying to work out how to get up to the nest boxes; this was after she had already been up and down the ramp at least 30 times; she got herself stuck between the nest boxes and the door 3 times. Eventually, after all of that plus nearly destroying three nest boxes [kicking the contents everywhere] she finally deposited a beautiful white egg

Good morning folks :frow Well, who knew that a male Koel [cuckoo] not only sings his mating call during the day but also at night? Something else I learnt this week. However, given a choice, I would prefer to gain additional knowledge during the day, not 3 o'clock in the morning! ;) I can not be angry with him though; who knows it could be Porter [for the newbies, he was a juvenile Kole who spent a couple of months in our back tree and still visits occasionally; beautiful fella]. Hubby is already outside with his laptop under the gazebo supervising free range. The girls are out early so that my son can get a sleep in, being the weekend and all and not having to work. Not sure why I worry about the gals waking him up though; I have no idea how he seems to hear them but not the Crows, Koels, Noisy Miners and Butcher Bird [Chucky] etc that started early morning  MullyAly thanks for the cool info on the Pet Containment System. Not that I need one at the moment but it is worth remembering. satay with all your Pekin’s broody, how does your rooster occupy his time? Poor little guy must be thinking it is some sort of conspiracy on the part of the hens ;) Anniebee that is good news about Mandy. I am definitely an Anitone fan after my little miracle :clap "Pay Attention to Meeeeeeee!"
He is hanging with his two turkey gobbler brothers so he's ok but i have seen him go over to them and look like over it yet girls and they go off and he goes back to hanging with the g's.

Glad you got some nice rain. We only got light spits but that is not unusual.
