I would not recommend ISA for anybody. Go astralorp or Rhode Island for good layers.

We have 3 australorps at the moment. I think Paul was thinking about the eggs, the australorps keep going broody. We've had ISA's for at least 10 years before we got this lot. I only had one broody in all that time. That was in the last lot we had Lucky was hatched from then, but she was the only one out of 12 eggs. I'm sure if it was a crow or the hen itself that ate the eggs and chicks. Lucky was rescued just as she was pipping. Hence the name Lucky. At the moment we have Andalusians, cochins bantam and normal, Araucanas, silkies, leghorn, light Sussex,
Spangled Hamburg's Australorps and a bantam australorps. But we only get at the most 6 eggs a day. But I think with the hot weather even ISA's won't lay everyday.

That's good to see The whole greyhound race scene needs to end. Too much cruelty going on sadly.

Nothing much new with me, Ezzie's gone clucky again, barely two weeks break this time. I blame Beatrice for inspiring her, who is no longer broody as she gets over it herself. I've been deciding on my new additions to the flock. I've narrowed it to these breeds: Blue Australorp, Houdan or Polish ( frizzle preferably!) , Seabright and Faverolle (salmon colour). I'm leaning towards an Aussie as my hybrids are 2 years now and will likely be slowing down soon, so another large egg layer would be good, and blue because I have one black chicken already, and the blues are so pretty. I like to have a variety of colours and breeds. Anyone got any pics of their blue Australorps to further convince me of their awesomeness please?

Sounds like you've had a hard choice. Picking breeds isn't easy. I agree a mixed flock is so nice. They all have different personalities.

I am not very experienced with chickens but love my Hambughs ...each have their personality ..each.go around mumbling / chuckling to themselves ...the older two have been regular daily layers....

Hamburgs are a very beautiful chicken, they're just generally not overly friendly from what I've heard. I wouldn't mind one, but they're not top of my list right now.

My hamburgs will let my granddaughters pick them up. The only other ones they can pick up are the australorps and the silkies, they were handled by them from hatching, though the Australorps are a bit big for them now.

That's one of my girls her names Dotty she lets the girls pick her up and cuddle her. They even held her while I cut the nails. They are so docile, but I'm not sure if that's normal.

I think our chickens have their own personalities they don't seem to know what their breed is supposed to be like.
They just behave as they want regardless of what they are meant to be.

Yep my Hamburghs actually swat to be picked up...and fed out of my grand daughters hand....even the shyest one is quite friendly.

Can you get a vet to do a test, not sure how but is determining whether rooster or hen go only how they look?
