Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

These are the real wellies that we drove to pick up the eggs and saw the parent stock. These are also the eggs that the broodies decided to abandon a week before hatch an they were cold when i found them. So the poor chicks have gone through 2 hours of being cold and 9 power outages over the weekend so the fact i have got any to hatch is down right amazing lol.

Hey guys,

So... It turns out my much loved and favorite black pekin bantam Mabel is at 16 weeks, well... more of a Morris. My wife woke to her/him crowing for the first time this morning which means she/he will have to go back to the store tomorrow.

I guess there's been a few tell tale signs, she'd let the other eat while she patroled the area, her feathers around the neck had started to change colour, she was a tad bigger than the other pekin and looking at her aging the morning her wattle has started to grow. It all seems a little obvious now but being new to the chook game we didn't really know what to look for. You live and learn I guess.

Never thought I'd grow so attached in just a few weeks but I'll be saddened to see Mabel go.

Yeah, I suggested to the wife that we sell the house and move to the country but she didn't seem that keen. On the up side though we'll have to replace him with two chooks so I guess that's a win! :)

I'm sorry to hear Bicudo.

The new news from me- WARNING its bad and it sucks-
Started with 16 fertile eggs- put 6 under Sussex broody she got of them with 1 week to go before hatching, they all died , nothing i could do.
Put the rest 10 eggs under Isa Brown broody- 2 got crushed by other hens early on, then 3 chicks hatched but mother 2 rejected of them that leaves 1 alive chick (White Leghorn) and 5 eggs, cracked open the last 5 eggs today all infertile and stank

. All in all pretty disappointed but still happy that i got at least one chick. The lady whom i got them of was very nice offering me another dozen eggs free of charge but i think ill just get some of her 1 week old chicks.

Lol. I wasn't too keen on the idea when hubby first suggested it either. I was born and bred a city girl and hubby was from the country. I hope you get some lovely replacement girls.

Oh thats bad luck Luke. Seems there is something in the air. I got 5 wellies to hatch and the last 5 eggs 3 were wrotten too. Off eggs is about the worst smell there is.
