Hey harveyhorses, check out post #154, those 7week old roos have red combs and tiny tail...I think there's still hope for us!

You could never tell if you were eating a fertile egg or not.There is no taste difference, and the only way that the cell would grow is with incubation or the hen sitting on them. Just because you buy eggs in the store does not mean they are not fertile, trust me! The good news is you do not need a rooster to have eggs!

One of our chickens had fertile eggs and you couldn't even tell the difference. I am sure you will have a nice handsome rooster.

Yeah I read a lot of posts talking about cockerel comb/wattles development, I need to know about pullets, so I don't make the mistake of getting rid of a pullet thinking it's a cockerel

Here's my 6 week old ...as you can see not much going on as far as wattles and comb, but what about the tail? The feathers are long, thin and pointy, does the tail say pullet or cockerel?

At 6 weeks old mine couldn't be distinguished by the tail anymore. But the comb and wattles had started to at least get some pinkish color to them. What I found interesting is that the hens started to develop nice wide poofy cushions on their butts by then. Now, at about 8 weeks I can tell for sure by the combs as the pullets combs still look yellowish and fine toothed like a serrated knife, and the cockerels combs have bigger lobes and mostly red/pink.

hmmm.. mine must have developed fast or something.
These are mine at 5 weeks. The two in the upper left corner are good comparisons. You can see how the hen has barely any comb and you can even see the poofy cushion she wears. Some of the cockerels had longer tails than the pullets at this point.


... ok, never mind, I'm having internet issues.. not enough bandwidth to post a darn pic...
