Australorps breed Thread

I am still trying to figure out why people on BYC are selling hatching eggs stating that they are show quality (SQ), are you kidding me!!! Please explain to me why someone would believe that claim and pay good money only to get some far cry from SOP chicks. Maybe there is a magical way to look into and egg and determine that the chick will be SQ. Please teach me how to do this.

Your right, you cant..even the best can throw a blinger and often do..but with some breeders your chances are a lot better of getting decent stock to work in but you are never guarenteed perfect birds from every egg....I seldome if ever see australop eggs for sale in here, but see a lot on ebay..Ive never sold eggs..dont feel confident in it so I just make them for myself ..nothings set in my chookies..Ive given a bunch away , especially to kids...even then just like all chickens anything can come out of that egg..I bought some from ebay quite a while ago, wound up getting jersey giants, gave them to 4 h kids..buyer beware on ebay..there are some really good reputable breeders in there, but its a gamble..some people are really good at posting great pictures that anrt even in this country ..I found some wowwie orps one time in ebay..osuman or one of the guys said, Lynne..look at this..the pictures were from a farm in england and they certianally were not selling on ebay..somone was using thier pics..very misleading..maybe they should use terms like potential sq but no guarentee which would be true

Good suggestion. Use something like "birds from the same line won prizes" or the one won something or anything of the sort. You can never guarantee that an egg will hatch a SQ bird!

I have recently fallen in love with lard and am trying hard to get over the false propaganda that lard is bad health wise. Crisco shortening is now considered bad for heath.

First eggs were good for you. Then they were bad. Then they were good again. I say use lard if you want to. Makes better pie crust than Crisco anyway

Thought I would share a couple of photos of my Australorps. They are 8 months old now and finally laying. They will go into the breeding pen this month. Sorry the last one is so blurry. I had trouble getting a side shot of Outback, the cock. I was able to get a couple of second generation of this line that tigercreek bred last weekend. I am really happy that there are several cockerels. I also got one of Outback's brothers. I hope to have enough genetic diversity to have a healthy flock. What do you guys think?

And Raven my 6month old.
I love this breed, they are shiney and love to be near you. Raven rides on my shoulders while I do chores.
