Australorps breed Thread

G'day ,

Thanks for the kind words about that cockerel. That bird won a major regional show over many breeds in late April 2012, but at the biggest show in Australia (Poultry 2012 - Canberra ACT) in June 2012 he was in a class of about 40 Large Black Australorp Cockerels and never even got a place. That will give you an idea of how competitive it is here. I sold him and seven other fowls at the show to interstate buyers.

I've found a picture of my wife with that cockerel's mother. This hen is still here and still in our breeding pens. The photograph of the fowl doesn't show her off very well, but she won Reserve of Show Overall at one of our larger shows a few years back. That whole family has always produced our best beetle green sheen. You can see it in the wing of the fowl that my wife is holding.

I am unsure if I am able to add pdf files here, does anyone know if I can? If so I can show you a few rough photographs of some of my yards and pens.

I've also placed an order for that product you mentioned called "Big Old Bird". I thought I would try it on some late bred youngsters I have here to see how they go.

Regards,

Ross

My 3 BA's. will be 4 weeks tomorrow...but these pics were taken about 2 days ago. The second guy wouldnt look at me :(
They are so cute!

Nothing real Rooish yet but watch the last one--comb looks a bit more developed. That still does not mean much at this age. In the next two weeks or so, watch for bigger pink combs and a pink line where the wattles start.

If anyone is interested, we have Black and Blue Australorp hatching eggs available for a limited time as we will be letting the boys and girls rest after this next week.
Please contact us for details and happy hatching to all!

Love seeing the awards! How exciting..It must be really tough there..so many fantastic Aussie lorps..

Question, will a BA roo over a barred rock hen produce sex link chicks?

Yes. It has to be that way. I found this:

However, if you cross a barred mama to a black daddy, the boys will be barred and all of the girls will be black.

Are you going to make meat crosses?
