Australorps breed Thread

Thanks rattlesnakeridge! yours are looking great
Loving them!

Had an APA judge here coaching me all morning..he was here for almost 2 hours..telling me what I need to do in every pen.. .Boy did he LOVE my australorp rooster..He said , as American SOP goes that is a top bird..He hated my aussie hens , all but 1...he said that only one hen is very usable, the rest are scrap..told him those are retired to breakfast egg duty
lol.png
...the one he liked was the same hen walt liked...but boy have I had a time getting a fertile egg out of her..she rejected that rooster...he really looked those babies over, said its too soon to tell a lot, but he picked out the same female that I did, picked her up and mulled over her..nice little 5 point comb wonderful eye ..well built, now its just waiting..he said he knows duane urch, has been to his poultry barn ..

I had to take notes ..a lot to remember..he let me know where I was making mistakes and where I was doing well..and what I want to focus on..he will be coming back about the end of July to make show selections with me..

That is great news!

Perhaps separating the Cock form the nice hen for a week and then put the two of the together for a couple of hours a day.

If that fails, maybe AI?

he wants to watch these new babies..he thinks a cross between them and this still young rooster is going to be very interesting..so next spring ..its a game of patients..its going to have to be ai with that one hen..we tried all kinds of things..the chemestry just wasnt there..lol!

Can anybody tell me if this is an Australorp or not? I got it as a striaght run about 9 weeks ago and I'm unsure of breed and sex. Any help would be apprciated!

It does look like a Black Australorp to me. But wait to hear from the experts on this thread. ~Dee~

Tchene,
The beak, comb, head and feet say Black Australorp at this time. We will be interested in pics in a month from now. Trust me, not all black chicks are Black Australorps but yours looks pretty good from what I can see in the pics. PS the black and silver bird in the first pic is a cockerel!!!

Ocap,
Glad to help. You do not only have to watch your own dogs, but strays are killers around here!
On another note, spring is here and all the other predators are hungry. The Hupp 6 is now the Hupp 5. I caught a fat raccoon chowing down on my precious blue australorp pullet last night, he had his last supper! He literally ate thru an anchor fence dog kennel to do his nasty! If y'all use chicken wire beware!
Chet, I am sorry for dropping the ball, and will do my best with the rest.
