Australorps breed Thread

a great story and lesson for everyone Ron ! i knew hens can store sperm in their bodys..had no idea it could be for that long..
Hi folks!

There is another way you can get a chick like that. There is a dangerous theory out in chicken land that was posted again yesterday on the Heritage Large Fowl thread. The first time I heard it was after a talk that Dr. Bramwell gave last Fall in Arkansas. The theory is that you only need to wait two weeks after introducing a new Rooster to a breeding pen.

COMPLETE AND UTTER RUBBISH!

Three people, including myself, have had Frankenchickens hatched that way from breeders. The old folks actually knew something about this.

This is my Show quality stock SG Dorking

The Breeder was working on a project and had a Wheaten Ameracauna in with the Hens. She waited two weeks after moving in a SG Dorking Rooster.

Yes folks that is an SG Dorking X Wheaten Am--Easter Egger from hatching eggs sold to me as Pure SG Dorking....You really do need to wait 30 days before the eggs are clear of the old Rooster. I also hatched Franken Rooster. I did get what looks like one SG Dorking Pullet but you never know. I can't use her for breeding, which is a shame.

Amy Beth in Redding CA had Franken Chickens hatch after 27 days.

When I was growing up, Which is the 60s and 70s, my Dad said:" The hen can store the sperm for up to 30 days." It was a surprise when I got on here and read about the two week theory. I thought 30 days was common knowledge with Poultry.

It is like my Grand Dad said: "Smart Man forgot to tell the chickens it was only 2 weeks and not 30 days!"

The thing we often forget is that Birds are not Mamals. They need to survive as a species, so the storing of sperm long term allows Hens to reproduce when the Roosters are eaten by predators.

If you think about it logically, if sperm lives for 30 days, why would introducing a new Rooster change the fact that the old sperm is still in the organ that stores it and still viable? We are not talking about a large volume. It all mixes together and there is only one release valve--fertilizing the egg.

The Hupp 5 are officially showing their sex. Pics will follow when I get a chance, big sale today and I am trying to recover. I have 1-splash cockerel, 1- splash pullet, 2- blue cockerels, and 1- blue pullet. That's 3- cockerels and 2-pullets! For what I plan to do it is perfect.Next year should be some interesting breedinng of Black, Blue, and Splash Australorps.
