Australorps breed Thread

Thanx! I'm in no hurry. :) From what I understand the later they lay the more mature they are and it helps them and that's my main goal to have some good and healthy bird laying for a lonnnnng time. :D

That is true!

The first eggs are usually larger when they start later too. It is hard to wait though. The eggs are so much better than store eggs.

yep they are. Right now I am buying them from my niece so it helps her to. She has 5 kids, 3 boys, 2 girls so she can use it plus it helps us since they're soooo much better than store bought ones.

Dee,
Thank you! I love my little pullets. The BAs really do "honk" and they are very vocal. Love the little gals. Look forward to eggs. My older daughters birthday is September 16 and I always told her that the chicks will probably start laying around her birthday. Who would have thought I would be right?!

Type, meaning body shape. Chest, width, length of back, tail angle, leg width, proper stance just to name a few. I read the APA SOP for Australorps over and over and over again until I see a picture in my head of what the bird is supposed to look like. Some of my birds come close to that picture and some do not. My biggest fight was with tail angle and overall width of the birds. I hate squirrel tails and crow heads or skinny birds. I also only keep good layers, slakers are gone. Recently I have been working on combs and faces. I like clean faces and triangle points. Spindly points on BA's are a real problem. It is not enough for me me to have a good bird here or there. I want uniformity in my flock and that is the hard part. I have learned the hard way that pretty is not as pretty does in chickens. The best does not always make the best, and that is the real problem. You just keep trying and sometimes you get lucky.

I think they are gorgeous!!

That would be so neat if she got the first egg on her birthday. I can imagine the excitement she will have whenever she does see the first egg. Glad you are love'n your BAs. I certainly do share the feeling. My funny girl, Peppa, runs up to me each time I go out to the paddock to tell me the latest in her honky hoarse voice. Bella is always right behind her seemingly agreeing with everything she says.

They are beginning to settle in with my old hen, Betsy Barr Rock who is a very gabby gal. She scared them for quite awhile with her loud mouth and bossy ways. They hang out together afternoons in the shade like this pic everyday now. Life is good! ~Dee~

Kurt,
I think there are a lot of people out there (me being one) that have Urch BAs and would be interested in your Rattlesnake Ridge Line.

I got ten Urch BAs this spring and ended up with only two pullets, so...... over the winter I will be having four different "cockerel" lines using the same two pullets and silkie brooders.

Oh, I would just love to own one or two of the Ratlesnake Ridge Line if you ever sell. You have the Best!
