Australorps breed Thread

Not my Hatchery BAs. I will let you know about the Hupp BAs.

My Blue pullet was ripping up the nest box this afternoon..Come on first egg!

OK thank you Ron! I'm keeping 7 pullets but did not like the cockerels at all so I sold all of them. They were just too tall and lanky for lack of a better word. So I don't have a cockerel but can get one if I decide I want to keep these. I am surely going to keep them for awhile though until can get some eggs. lol They will be 4 months old the 9th and look like grown birds. They've been eating fermented food for about 2 months now I guess.

I know BA rooster are supposed to have black shanks but is blackish/slate color ok? Got 3 roosters and 1 is going to the freezer but I am having a hard time to pick the other 2.

One rooster has that slate color shanks but he's have very nice body/tail but not liking his head/comb/toes.

The other rooster has nice black shank/nice straight toes has a very nice head/comb, decent body, but I'm not liking his tail.

Who should I keep?

Today the Hupp Blue and Black Australorps are 22 weeks old. When I was locking them up for the night I found an egg in the run! It is 37G in weight.

I Bet mine will lay some day. Mine are 19 weeks old but I have 4 buckeyes that are 25 weeks old and no eggs yet.

Good to hear Everyone's blue and black Australorps are good and starting to lay eggs!
I have some blues and blacks hatching today. So far I have two blues and one black out. Hope that they will show some promise as they develop.

Thanks everyone for all the great tips!!! I tried scrambled eggs and they looked at me like I was crazy!! Going to give the hard boiled a try today. Also love the tip about the calf manna. Thinking my three sex links that just started laying could benefit too!

One medical question for you all please.
Are Aussies more prone to intestinal sheds than other breeds? Found what appeared to be a shed last Saturday in their roosting cage (where they sleep) and then another one this morning. No way to tell if from the same bird. Just finished a 5 day treatment of ampro because I found more blood the next day after the first (none since) and didn't want to take chances. Birds are otherwise doing well and still in a divided run from the older girls. (They are inside the same coop but have their own pophole which lines up to their private "suite" ).

I will being supplying the requested pics as soon as my camera recharges.

Thank you all again for being so generous with your help!

Be sure you give the birds you treated with Amprol ,Poly Vi Sol vitamins WITHOUT iron. Treatment doses of Amprol tie up the B vitamins in birds, and can cause a neurological condition that resembles Mareks, because of the deficiency.Better safe, than sorry.

Sent a 24 week old Buckeye & a 19 week old Black Australorp cockerel to freezer camp today. The dressed carcass on the Buckeye was 4.28# & the BA weighted 4.76#

I have not gotten any eggs from the pullets of either breed yet.
