Australorps breed Thread

I have a hatchery BA, she is now 14 weeks and very full but she looked similar to yours at one month but had more of a tail. I will post a pic of her then and now ( I may have to do it in two post, my phone will only let me post one pic at a time).

Thanks!!! I wonder if the slower developing tail could mean roo??? I got "her" from Meyers and she was sexed as a pullet but you never know.

I really hope she's a she. She is one of my tamest and friendliest!

Wondering if anyone can give me your thoughts. I have a hatchery BA chick. She is 1 month old tomorrow. She seems to be doing great. She's friendly, active, and jostling for top chick position. But she is much smaller than my Barred Rock and my Golden Sex link. She about as long as my two English Orpingtons but leaner looking (they are really round). Since I only have one of each breed (except the English) I'm not sure if it's just breed difference with rate of maturity. Like I said she seems healthy so I'm hoping it's just breed difference but would love some opinions of people who know more than me.

These are both taken at 24 days. Will be taking one month pictures tomorrow

Your description comparing her to orps is right on! BAs are thinner curvier orpington types.

The chick looks like a pullet to me.

I got mine from Ideal Hatchery. I've read that slower feathering is an indication of a roo but hatchery birds are always a surprise LOL. Just be patient she may hit a growth spirt over night and sprout a tail!?! Good luck, keep us posted.

Hope so. Do you mind pointing out what looks like a pullet to you. Trying to learn as much as I can.

The color and size of the comb and no wattles. At 4 weeks old, most cockerels will have pink and bigger combs and will have started having wattles.

Dee, The Australorp laid an 84 Gram egg today. That's about a size over Jumbo. We have gotten a few Jumbos from her. This is the largest yet and they are a beautiful brown.

Awwwww! She is a cutie. She looks just like mine did at that age. Makes me miss those days. Often the hatchery BA's are more scrawny for lack of a better word than the SQ BA's I have noticed from pics. I know mine were/are but they are healthy. The SQ BA's have wider bodies, etc. I am sure there are exceptions but I am speaking in general what I have observed. Yours looks fine to me. Also I have raised Barr Rocks and they are slightly larger. Hope that helps. ~Dee~

I'm interested in finding an Australorp breeder in the Frederick County Maryland vicinity. I'm having a hard time with that. So far, I've had a response from two.... in MA and Virginia. I had a bad experience with getting them from an online chick organization...I won't name a company, but I was supposed to have 2 females and I ended up with 2 males, and had to find a home for them. The roosters were really nice, and friendly, but we only had 5 hens, and the neighbors could hear them. If it would only have been one, I think we could have gotten away with it....but two? I couldn't keep just one because they were buddies, they roosted beside each other, rested while outside beside each other. They were inseparable.... anyhow, I'm still looking for females......4-5 week old chicks, or pullets. Thanks
Jill
