Australorps breed Thread

Hi Kurt,
Chicken math seems almost exponential, and same with housing and feed. We purchased a small farm, inherited 16 barnyards and hatched 30 of same last summer. I've chosen the Australorp as the breed I will focus on and now it seems my plans are for hatching 100+ this year?? I've purchased my SOP and will be going to a show or 2 to see how they stack up.

They are doing Great!

One died from Fungus--likely Valley Fever that we have here since all Animals are exposed to it when coming here. We have access to free Necropsy here so I know for sure. The other three pullets are doing fine and I have 3 Cockerels living on an Egg Farm in Winters. I hope to set up a breeding pen out there soon.

Have a steak for me at the Buckhorn while you are down there.

My "flock" is very small I have 2 RIR and an EE. I want to get a couple Australorp chicks in the spring. Need to find a breeder within driving distance. I dont want to deal with hatcheries if I dont have to. I have only been a chicken mom for 8 months now. My girls are all very tame. I can hold, flip to examine, pet and hand feed. They even follow me in and out of their coop to their tractor. :) Hubby and even my sis call me the crazy chicken lady!!

Welcome ! Do you have just hens ? When I had just hens they were very friendly to me ..
Now not so much unless ? I have a treat ..They like my BA Roo better ..LOL

Thanks, only have hens, except for the silkie roo who has ended up in the house with his girlfriend because of illness and assault. Spoiled now!! Im starting a lger grp in the spring with barred rocks and some Aussies. Crazy Lucy will be stew meat then.

If I must go the hatchery route, anyone recommend a specific one for Aussies? I live in Georgia just west of Atlanta.

Welcome to BYC. You will feel right at home here with the crazy chicken people. My crazy chicken lady is my 8 year old Granddaughter. I am just south of Macon.
