Not goofy at all. I'm curious why you have chosen the Australorp? Your 'question' is very broad and I hope you have a good aswer to mine before someone tries to answer yours.

I was looking through the McMurray Hatchery catalog, and the famous laying record caught my eye. And I needed 5 more chicks to fill out the order.

The Australorps are great birds...but don't buy them from McMurray. You might get Australorps or you might get Jersey Giants or a cross of the two.

You can get excellent production quality Australorps from Cackle Hatchery and that's a fact.

McMurray has fallen in quality in the last ten years and you might get just about anything because they have become an agent and do not raise most of the breeds they sell.

Additionally, Cackle Hatchery has their own farms and raise all their own breeders.

Just my opinion but I do know what I'm talking about in this matter.

It is my first post on this thread, but not the last.

Here is my Australorp roster, two years old...

How beautiful! I often feel ambivalent about blues, but maybe I just haven't seen enough like that one.
