Australorps breed Thread

My Australorp looks exactly like the chick in the pic above.
I think mine IS purebred, but a bad hatchery quality.

Nearly all Hatchery Australorps are mixed with something or they have not been bred to Standard. Hatcheries make money selling chicks and they can't do that well if the Hens do not lay lots of eggs. They put breeding value on production of eggs.

Of course they lose the meat potential so Dual purpose is not as good, but there is plenty of meat on hatchery Australorps. If you have ever looked into feed conversion rates, Cornish X hybrids just cannot be beaten by any Dual Purpose breed. The numbers are half to a third of other breeds for meat production to feed eaten.

Of course nothing tastes better than a 16 to 20 week old Dual Purpose chicken. Have you ever eaten an American Bresse? Dorking and Dorking Crosses are amazing too.

The beak is pink, with a streak of yellow and black splotches. Here is a close up (but kinda fuzzy)

The legs and feet are black but the bottoms are pink - that's another indication of being mixed, right?

I don't know if you can see it, but there are tiny black bump on the legs - are those spur nubs?

I thought pink or gray/white was normal. No yellow.

My daughter came over today, and we blunted the rooster's spurs, then we put the oldest group of my young ones in the grow-out pen. The young ones were right at home. The rooster decided to stand guard duty, but a hen cackled for him. The poor guy looked so confused. He wanted to go be with the hens, but felt compelled to stand guard over the kiddies. Well, the hen got a bit vocal, so he went running out to her for a few minutes, then ran back in to stand guard at the grow-out pen. This happened several times. It was sort of comical. When we started to leave, the rooster and hens ran to the other side of the run, and were all squawking. I swear I could hear them saying "hey you forgot something".

Ok, so It sounds like mine is an Aussie - are they usually REALLY vocal? S/he complains about everything! The 2 BSLs are practically silent compared to Noisy Pants.
