Australorps breed Thread

New Australorp babies just hatched

I just wanted to tell you guys that my Australorp is making me love the breed even more. (and I would like any advice offered)
I'm just starting to put my dogs harness on the chickens and the Australorp has been the best of all of them so far.
My Black sex link (I love her a lot) is a totally different story. Every time I put the harness on her she won't walk and if she does walk she walks backwards! (probably trying to slip out of it)
Any advice on how to stop her? I offer treats but that doesn't help.
Should I leave it on her over night? All day? My Australorp didn't even walk weird at first!

Uhhhh...Just think Victory???

It seems to me that leaving a harness of any kind on a chicken over night just might fall into the category of abuse. It would certainly be dangerous, especially if the bird got freaked out by something and really became frantic. It could actually hang itself.

Perhaps back to square one??

Yeah, I thought so about the over night thing. ( I probably wouldn't have done it even if you said to do it) What exactly IS square one? I think I'm on it already. Lol

oh my I could imagine the looks you'll get walking chickens on a leash. with any adult animal foreign things like collars and harness can really freAk them out. It's best to start leash training babies but honesty puting it on once they are in the dark and sleepy then actually letting then fall back to sleep and awake with it on is very affective (I've leash trained many animals...but no chickens.Turk is right about it being dangerous but with proper care you could try it.You just need to confine her to small safe sleeping quarters(like a dog crate) and place it where you can hear and come to her rescue through the night.A head light with a low red setting would be helpful other wise you will need to be in the dark. You would need to hold her wings gently till she settled before you attempted to step away.I wouldn't call it abuse lol I doubt someone who thinks enough of a chicken to walk it on leash would just toss it on a coop perch flailing and wish it luck
