Good day ,i have a Australorp hen called Bella that just got her first 8 chicks out of her 13 eggs she laid the first time she breeds, the dad is a Hi-Line 36W Rooster called Rosi.I am not sure why but is it normal for her chicks to be all different not one looks the same by feather patterns except the one chick looks like Bella and will it be possible to identify roosters from hens at 2 months?

I attached a video clip to show all 8 but ill be happy to post more photos too.

I lost my 16 week old Australorp chick and my Australorp cross, chick today :(

The Australorp cross became sick about a week ago, she was gasping and coughing constantly... took her to the vet, but the vet wasn't sure what it was, so she gave me some antibiotics to see if that would fix the problem. A couple of days later my pure Australorp became wobbly on her feet... I didn't take her to the vet, i just waited it out and gave her vegemite water as a vitamin boost to see if it would help.

They both got worse and worse... The pure Australorp seemed to be displaying the typical leg paralysis you see with Mareks disease (one leg forward, one back) :(   :(  I don't know heaps about Mareks disease, but I just hope that if it was Mareks disease, it hasn't infected my whole flock!!! My Australorp cross continued to gasp for air, showing no signs of improvement, and also started to become wobbly on her feet, struggling to walk around and falling over very regularly...
They were both vaccinated for Mareks disease at 1 day old.. same as my other two chicks.

Today I decided that they had suffered enough and considering they were showing no signs of improvement, I had them put down.

Now I just hope my other two chicks who were living with them before they showed signs of illness, don't get sick too!!

So that makes a total of 4 out of 4 Australorp chicks that have gone wrong for me... 3 died and 1 ended up a rooster... I think I'm gonna steer clear from chicks for a while.... Perhaps buy some POL pullets.

I'm so sorry to hear if your loss! How frustrating and painful to watch them worsen and suffer.

I personally couldn't deal with it. I'd give them antibiotics in the water for one day and if they didn't display some improvement in 24 hours, they'd have to go. Chickens are too cheap to buy in most cases and having them around sick depresses me beyond expression.

My dad gives them NO chanced. If a chicken looks sick/sickly, it's gone...RIGHT NOW, but he has so many, the void is not noticed. I think he might have the right idea but I like to give them some chance but since he has almost no problems, I'm guessing he weeds out the problem genetics as they show up...Just Guessing.

My Dad is the same, if there's a sick chicken, there's no point in keeping it around according to him. I wanted to give these two a chance. The antibiotics I got was a 5 day course of it, so I suspected I had to wait more than 24 hours for it to improve. And sometimes I did think she looked better... but then right at the end she really went down hill.

Interesting chicks. The pullets should be great layers.
