Australorps breed Thread

Don't know those spiders, do have far too many red back spiders under the house though and have had a funnel web spider here once. Funny how you get used to things, I tend to think of Australia as a lot safer animal wise than anywhere else I've seen on tele.

Mind you I have personally never seen a single one of those scary things you have mentioned in the flesh, but bet most of you have seen a bear or coyote or rattle snake or mountain lion ...... ;-)

I've seen and or disposed of everything on that list except a bear. I've seen one on tv though, lol!

We had a Bob cat laying on the roof of my shed scoping out my birds yesterday morning. It had been treed by my dogs and had to be dealt with. Little bitty thing, probably just a cub... But I was t about to let it get big and fat on my birds.

Spencer is turning out to be a monstrous rooster. As soon as i have internet up and running at the house again I'll post some pictures of him and his two ladies.

This one looks like it could be a roo

You have all pullets. Did you buy pullets? Sexing from the hatchery is 95% accurate.

Bear? Yes (hiking in Tennessee).

Coyote? Yes, they're everywhere here, but not terribly dangerous

Rattle snake, water moccasin, copperhead, cottonmouth? Yes, and gave them PLENTY of space!!!

Mountain lion: Nope, and I hope to never (up close anyway)!

I've always wanted to visit Australia. <3

Please tell us the age. It makes a big difference.

I edited the first post with the ages in there they are 7 weeks old but you must've missed it. :)

Yes I bought all pullets and it would be awesome if they really are all girls. :)

Since you purchased pullets--and there is only a 5% chance of them getting it wrong, odds are greatly in your favor. Now with them being 7 weeks old with no cockeral comb or wattles(go back to the picture I posted and look at the big pink wattle) you have an even better chance of having all pullets.

At 22 to 25 weeks old all of them will be laying eggs for you.

In Florida, we have the spiders, snakes, bears, coyotes, sharks, bobcats, and alligators. Not to mention all the regular chicken predators like racoons, eagles, hawks, etc. It's a jungle out there!

Well, on the news there have been a few lone wolf attacks, which is strange. Normally we don't have many of them, so no large packs, and they tend to be very afraid of people, so they're rarely even seen. The only time they've been a problem is if some idiot cornered one, or messed with a den that had pups in it. They are also talking about allowing a hunt to thin the bear population. Bears are protected here, so you can't even shoot one if it's killing your pets, and/or livestock. The animal rights groups are gearing up. I wish they would mind their own business. They've done a lot more damage than good here when it comes to wildlife.
