Australorps breed Thread

Yep , I have heard that rumor also, but no one has ever proven it to me. All I know is that when you get red leakage in a blue cockerel nobody is raving about it, including me. The red leakage I am refering to is from a buff orpington gene that comes up from breeding years ago. I have never seen it come up in pure black aussies before, nor do I want it to. Red leakage can haunt you!

This is the hen I was referring to with the red leakage. She also has purple sheen, and amber eyes. She's really good for raising chicks, but, I do not plan on using her for breeding purposes.

This is Spencer's hatch mate. She's a very sweet pullet, very curious. She was squatting here because I was throwing things at her to get her to look at me. Didn't happen.

The front profile shows how full this pullet is. I really, really like her. Both of these guys have beautiful dark eyes and legs.

Red is good for breeding, I hear.

I have read that purple sheen is good sometimes to use for breeding because it will help with the green sheen. Purple sheen is from too much oil production.

Thanks Kurt!

Orum,
I am a little confused with your pics. The hen that has the red leakage also has the wrong color eyes to be a pure Australorp.
Her eyes are supposed to be almost black but dark brown is accepted, not amber as your pics show. Black Rocks, black sex links and alot of other black birds have amber eyes, but not Black Australorps. The purple sheen, red leakage and amber eye color lead me to believe something is mixed into your hen. The pullet in your pics is very nice looking. I am not trying to offend in anyway just relaying information from the American Poultry Assocs. Standard of Perfection Book in reference to Black Australorps. Below is one of my pullets and a cockerel.

Ta Daaaaaaaaaa.................................. Drum roll please ! Here's some pics of my RattlesnakeRidge hatch @ a few days old. Lots of blues & blacks

Thank you Kurt ! I'm very excited about these chicks.

Kurt, you're confirming suspicions on my old hen. I had always been thrown by her eyes, I've never had an Aussie with eyes like hers. Dark brown maybe, but not Amber. The older hen is hatchery, came from a black pullet bin. She was given to me in good faith from my MIL with a bunch of other hatchery mutts. They're great layers, but I don't breed them. I refuse to.

The pullet and Spencer the cockeral are to have their own paradise pen. The older hen lives with my layers. My young birds are still free ranging together, as they just aren't ready to be separated into breeder pens. I really need to find some more hens closer to the SOP to put under him so he doesn't wear her out. I may give him some olive eggers to keep number nine from being torn to shreds, he is still a zealous mate.

@DavidAR Those do appear to be Aussie chicks. You'll love them.

@cracrzy4chicks good looking bunch fluffy butts!

DavidAr,
Time will tell, although TSC thinks all black chicks are Australorps!

Juanita,
You are very welcome. I am so happy for you. Did you hatch something else (the lighter chicks) or did you get some splashes?

Orum,
The amber eyes was the clincher.

Still on BEAR WATCH!!!
