Australorps breed Thread

Quote: It is better to go by the comb size with straight comb breeds. Also the wattles. On my home computer I have a guide that talks about the shape of the points and blade to tell boys from girls for BAs.

I will try to find it tonight. The guide I have does not use color for sexing BAs.

Ron, I think you are talking about the rear of the comb that is either rounded or pointed and I have never been able to figure out what they are talking about when the chicks are young. A pic or diagram may help.

Dee, Ba's are one of the hardest to sex young. BR's in a week, SLW's in three to four weeks easy. EE's and Ameraucanas give me a hard time too.

Enjoying looking at your pictures. When it comes time to pick mine out I am hoping I can detect a subtle girl attitude because day old chicks all look alike.

Hello Traveshamockery. I really like the look of your hen Penny!

She is a beauty. Great photography on that first pic. Her beautiful roundish dark eye is captivating. Thinking that would be a cool looking pic on my home office wall in a 8x10 size.

I based my thoughts on the two chicks I think seem like cockerels seem to have a bit of a larger comb in the pics from what I can tell. Along with their apparent 'be out front stance' protective cockerel behavior while the other three chicks stay in back & not stretching. Are they too young to display this behavior? ~Dee~

Thanks, Dee. That's a snap from my iPhone too!!! I haven't had the time for shots with the good camera. If you'd like a copy of it, PM me and I'd be happy to email you the file.

Quote: Hi again. Hey, your iPhone works great. Thanks. I was able to download it off your pic here. I'll work with it and see if it turns out for me. I also found a beautiful print of a BA hen and BA roo online for my office. Think I'll ask my DH if he would like to get it for me for Valentines' Day? LOL

How well is Penny laying eggs for you? Did you get her from a hatchery or a breeder? Do you have other BA's? ~Dee~

Well..... we DO NOT have Australorps!

However, the kids have some Australorp bantam eggs developing in the incubator.....

and.....

A BYC friend was talking to me on the phone this morning. She wanted to know if I knew of any 4H kids that would like to have some Black Australorps. My 11 year old son over heard our conversation. Needless to say, we moved some bantams out of large pens and made room for whatever we come home with tomorrow afternoon. Will take lots of photos and post asap.

She bought these out of a show and that exhibitor bought them from the Superior Farms sale out. Not sure what line they are, but are nice. called a Texas friend and he spoke to Jahdan. They came to an agreement for a dozen from his exhibition breeders. So I guess WE are not going to have Australorps....but Jahdan will!
