Australorps breed Thread

Hello everyone,
I have been catching up on everyone's posts. Been interesting to read. I have some hatchery BA's and some of Urch's line too. Their is a big difference in size and laying as well. At least with mine that is. The hatchery ones lay a smaller size egg and only 4 eggs a week. While my SQ ones lay an extra large egg and I am getting 5-7 eggs a week per hen, these do grow a little slower but I didn't push them either. I am looking for longevity as layers plus broody's. I have found that mine don't go broody until their 2nd year.

Hello Triplell. Nice to hear from you. I don't recall you posting here before so let me extend a warm welcome! That is so interesting to me about your SQ and hatchery BA egg size & laying. Do you mind my asking which hatchery you purchased them from? What about the birds themselves? Is there a noticeable size difference between the SQ & hatchery birds? TIA ~Dee~

Thanks for the welcome. My hatchery BAs were purchased from a private party. I took them to the fair and seen a huge difference in size, and conformation. The judge told me that he would not place them as they were poor hatchery quality. I purchased the grand champions and mine just became layers.

at the two week point My Urch BA chicks are larger than the buckeye or silver penciled wyandotte
Is this normal difference between these three breeds, or are Mr. Urch's BA line that much better than his other breeds?

My BAs are 6 weeks now. I need to find a bigger living space for them, our Rubbermaid box isn't going to keep them in for much longer.
I will try to get more pics tomorrow so I can get your opinions on what gender they are.

I just got 7 Black Australorps chicks (3 weeks old). I have not had chickens in years and this is the first time with this breed. Sweet and chatty Pictures to come

Are you ready for some new pics? The Tigercreek 4 are 14 weeks old, and the Hupp 6 are 4 weeks old. The Hupp 6 are blue and splash Australorps and are very, very, rare. Any guesses on gender of the Hupp 6?

Triplell - Interesting experience with the judge and all. Can you do a comparison of layer abilities between the two sets of BA's overtime?

CQ - An appliance box with a framed screen on top works for me for the duration.
