Australorps breed Thread

Here are a few pics of some of my Gilbert BA's. They are now 12 weeks old. I have 9 pullets & 11 Roos.

They are coming along nicely!

It sounds like you will have a lot of chicken dinners too.

Already got a few named Bar-B-Que, Crock Pot, Roasted, Kentucky Fried etc. It really is amazing how some of the Roos will just change in 2 or 3 weeks, I have the ones I am looking at hard leg tagged and then yesterday I saw one and thought he must have lost his leg tag but no he just had a growth spurt and passed a bunch up. Fun Breed to raise! Eventually the BA's may be all I keep. Plans right now are to eventually cull down to 2 or 3 Roos and 5 pullets, but I will see how it goes.

The fast growth of the Cockerels is a sign of a good Dual Purpose Breed. The Cockerels are for meat and the Pullets are for eggs.

I processed two White Bresse today. I fed them Kmut Scratch soaked in milk for two weeks--somewhat traditional for Bresse.

those are looking fantastic Dan..nice pullets..

love the polet de bresse..had it long time ago never forgot it..poultry processing is an art for those people..they capon them feed them like you are and onto dinner table..

Enjoying all the pics in this thread. We've only had our chickens for about a year. Started with these when they were pullets. Two were black hens, I had no breed name for them. Since then, we've incubated a couple sets of eggs. I was wondering if the chicks looked the way they did because they were mixed with a white Roo (Leghorn I think) but there all pics of your chicks here that are the same as mine!!!!!!!! I can't believe it!!!

So one I had named "Penguin" because of the white around the neck and down the belly. Then with the next batch, I got another 'penguin'

Then there was also this one that was all black, so I named him "Bear" like black bear (I know weird name for a chick) but he was so big as well. Bear turned into something a bit different at a few weeks of age, now with white flecks evenly going throughout his whole body of black, which I've seen in a few of these pics. Love it!

And Bear loves to be with the youngest chicks, the batch after him/her. There was a divider wall going half-way to divide our two lots in our 'nursery' and one day he jumped the fence, and would never stay on his own side afterward, snuggling with the other chicks.

Well so glad I have a name for my Australorps. One does a have a green sheen in some of her feathers, made me think it was going to be a roo when she was younger, but no, def a hen!!!

Love them all the same. I was so happy that we got some little black "Penguins" LOL
Hello and Welcome!

Sounds like you are having a lot of fun with your chickens. Very cute story about Bear and personally I like the name.

I only have two BA pullets and they are almost 12 weeks old. I named one Bella for the obvious reason that she is very pretty overall. She also is a food hog by the way. LOL She not only is the better forager between the two but also she constantly snatches food from Peppa as quick as a blink. Peppa is a handful in a way. A bit of a roo mindset me thinks. She is so curious, always on alert, squirmy when held, and an adventuresome pullet. She is personality +, so comical, always good for a laugh. Anyway, they are both very friendly and a joy in life. The green sheen on black feathers is amazing and so soft. Wonderful birds!

I need to get my camera back out there and take some new pics. But I have too much to do today. Besides Betsy Barr Rock knocked off the water spout attached to her water bottle thereby drenching the floor of the coop.

I pulled out the poo tray and began the process of drying out everything. But I need to gear up to tend to the DE and pine shavings dust as it all needs to be replaced again. Murphy's Law: I just cleaned the coop thoroughly less than a week ago so this is an unwanted repeat. Phooey! Well, enough whining... go giter done, lass!

Hi Dan.

I always enjoy seeing how your BA's are growing. They look marvelous! You do have some fine looking birds.

BTW, My favorite chicken dish would be sauteed with veggies in sesame oil. YUM!

Thanks Kurt! I always look forward to your pics. I still keep threatening to throw one of mine on the scale just to satisfy my curiosity. Question Kurt, and anyone else that is more experienced than I am. Should I separate the roos from the pullets?

Dan
