Australorps breed Thread

A standard BA is supposed to all black eyes right? What if the chick has yellow around its eyes with black pupil? Could that chick be another breed at 3 months old?
G'day,
The ideal Australorp has Black eyes, but can have Dark Brown eyes. They are bold and round.
If you breed using a light eyed, light brown eyed, yellow eyed or red eyed Australorp, particularly a male, then you are breeding impurities into the breed. If you just have them as egg layers it isn't an issue, but if you are a purist of the breed and wish to show them, cull any poor quality eye coloured males.
Regards,
Ross

Yea I figured that I also, I just wanted to confirm it before jumping to conclusion. I have 3 supposed BA's that have yellow in there eyes 2 boys 1 girl. Maybe there Jersey Giants and not BA? But the rest of the BA's I got have all black eyes. I got my chicks from Duane Urch and not a hatchery and he told me he gave me all BA's, no BJG. It's just hard to believe a dude raising poultry since 1950s would have the wrong color eyes chickens.

pix of number 7. Wondering if this is a he or a she? They will be 3 months old the 9th.

The combs really confuse me because some are really small and what I would think is a pullet and I see people saying they are cockerels. You can see what I mean in this next pic. BOTH of them in this pic have different combs and wattles. The one OUTSIDE the fence is still number 7. He/she was being honoray on me not wanting to come inside. The one inside the fence, you can barely see any combs or anything.

another pic below of number 7. I think it's a cockerel? ????

you can see the end of the wing on this pic also of #7.

this is number 9. What is this one?

Rosemarie,
Go to my profile and look at the Australorp Breed pics. I took pics every two weeks just for people like you needing to see their growth progression up to about 20 weeks. You can tell the difference between pullets and cockerels by 6 or 7 weeks for sure.

I did that but didn't see where you said they were pullets or cockerels? :) You have some pretty ones!

Rosemarie,
Both 7 and 9 are cockerels for sure. The one inside the fence in the second pic is a pullet.

THANK YOU! MAYBE I got it figured out then! shooooo need to get rid of some of them but didn't want to give someone roos if they wanted pullets. I'm only going to keep under 10 of the pullets and only 2 roos and I THINK I have at least 7 roos in the 22 birds.

16 wk old Blue & Splash HUPP Australorps that did not want pics taken today with my crappy camera.

Hey there Kurt, the birds are lookin alright, probably need to ship that male splash back to AZ :).....................haven't been on BYC for weeks, was going to post pics of my Blacks but of course forgot how to do it. I culled out all my males last weekend and have like 30 lbs of chicken in the freezer, mine are 5 months old next week and huge!
out of the 23 males................5 are looking good for show and breeding. The tails have been taking their time lifting but the sire males had almost flat tails too at 10 months old, but not after they turned 1year plus........nice tails finally. If you could kickstart my memory, I can share some pics.. Thanks!

Well I was out banding some more today and it looks like I have only 9-10 pullets out of 22 of them. Only thing there is like 3 that I'm not sure about because the combs and wattles aren't large like the other cockerels but they're not small like the pullets either. ???? So I'm wondering IF these are pullets that are maturing faster than the others?
Here is a pic of two together that I am referring to. Their combs aren't as large as the cockerels but aren't as small as the pullets.

Is this next one a cockerel?

This ones tall and lankie so I'm thinking it's a cockerel to.

Ok now on this next pic.....I think I see 3 pullets and not sure on two of the others but one is a cockerel.Actually the 4 is together in the middle of the pullets and they all don't look like cockerels to me.

This next pic it's tall and lanky but the comb isn't large like the others.

number 19 is a pullet right? and the one lying beside her is to.

I put their raw garlic in the hanging washing soap jug.
