Australorps breed Thread

Gramma,
What is the possibility of that being a Sumatra chick instead of a BA. It looks more like a Sumatra than a BA to me. The chest seems very dark, but it could be the lighting. All my BA's are much lighter colored in the chest when born.

Thanks for the catch Dan! I didn't realize till recently that Bob was hot that hard. The way I heard it it was a parking lot accident, and I just assumed that someone 'bumped' into him, knocked him down and he broke his leg somehow. Sounds like it is much more serious..... hope to hear good news about his recovery.........stan

Stan,
I heard he broke both main leg bones, and had to have at least a couple of surgeries. I wouldn't guarantee that is 100% correct but hopefully soon I will be able to reach Bob.

Bob was struck by a car on a 4 lane hwy. He was flown by life flight helicopter to hospital in Atlanta. He is very lucky to be alive. I visited with him for a good while during dinner the night before it happened. It was quite a shock. I think he is still in Atlanta in the Hospital.

That is more details than what I knew. Thanks for an update Matt! I kind of figured he might still be in the hospital there since I had not been able to get in touch.

There is a small chance ... We have 2 Sumatra roos ...It is not a sumatra egg . Shes just the Broody Lady .
The egg did come from one of Luckys Harem .
And he is very good at keeping the youngsters off his ladies .Comes charging if his hens are in Other Rooster Distress .
They normally stay close to him .
This one was out by herself ..she likes to wander
One of our older hens... today successfully stopped 3 young roosters from trying to mate her all at the same time ..then Lucky Crowed &
the boys froze ! and she ran back to Lucky !
Heres my Sumatras as babies see how teeny their heads are ?

Was able to stabilize the temperature in my homemade 'bator by letting in a little more outside air and tweaking the thermostat ever so slightly. I now have temps between 100-102 with 45-50% humidity. I hope this will hold and I see no reason why it shouldn't.

Glad you found us !!! I live north of KC and have was lucky enough to get two pullets out of ten in last April's order from Mr. Urch. I have joined the Easter-Hatch-along and will try for more.
Where did you find your four?

Shine of feathers and camouflage amazes me, I had pea fowl years ago and they would totally disappear in the trees when the sun would change angles. Breed replacement is a challenge for me, more correctly called elimination, four breeds need to eliminate two and eventually only have one, not making a decision only makes the problem worse.

MeanV2: What ever happened to your buckeyes (the rest of the story)?
