Australorps breed Thread

So splashes cant be White ? Splash sounds prettier than dominant white with black leakage.LOL :/

Yes that's right, splash and white are two completely different genes. Splash is a double dose of the blue gene. Splash is essentially black diluted down by two blue genes. Therefore a Splash chick can only eventuate if the parent birds are either both blue, Blue and splash, or both splash

A black gene is written as Bl
A blue gene is written as bl

Therefore:
Black bird = Bl/Bl
Blue bird = Bl/bl
Splash bird = bl/bl

Black x Black = 100% black progeny (Bl/Bl *2 copies of black gene)

Black x Blue = 50% black progeny (Bl/Bl *2 copies of black gene) & 50% blue progeny (Bl/bl *1 copy of black gene and 1 copy of blue gene)

Black x Splash = 100% blue progeny (Bl/bl *1 copy of black gene and 1 copy of blue gene)

Blue x Blue = 25% black progeny (Bl/Bl *2 copies of black gene) & 50% blue progeny (Bl/bl *1 copy of black gene and 1 copy of blue gene) & 25% splash progeny (bl/bl *2 copies of blue gene)

Blue x Splash = 50% blue progeny (Bl/bl *1 copy of black gene and 1 copy of blue gene) & 50% splash progeny (bl/bl *2 copies of blue gene)

Splash x Splash = 100% splash progeny (bl/bl *2 copies of blue gene)

White on the other hand comes in two forms; Dominant white and recessive white. It is common for dominant white birds to have black leakage however recessive white birds are almost always white providing they have two doses of the recessive white gene. If a bird only has one copy of recessive white then the white will not express at all and the bird will just be a carrier of that gene.
Hope that helps explain it a little clearer and I have not confused you :)

Does that apply to splash in all breeds ?

It applies to all breeds with blue genetics.

The Australorp x white rock is closer to mottled for genetics, but the chick in the picture is not mottled. Mottles is a feather that has s different color on the tip.

These Pita Pina pullets will be mottled

Like this.

Here's my youngest BA baby!

Thanks, do you think it's a male or female?, I feel it is a female...
How old is the chick?

The comb is still white to yellow which say pullet
There are pink wattles though....indicating a cockerel. The feathers look like they still have a molt still so they are not much help yet.

Big Mama having a helping of spaghetti squash this morning. So far, of all the gourds and veggies I've thrown in their coop, the spaghetti squash ALWAYS gets picked down to the skin. The watermelon, too. :)

Little Mama is keeping an eye on things in the background. :)

Enjoying FarmTV!
