Australorps breed Thread

Hello Aussie fans. I got 4 BA pullets that are now 7 weeks old. But, I am not sure about this 4th one. Is this a BA pullet?

.LOL thats your suprise chick...the yellow sole on the foot says that this chick is a black jersey giant..australorps have a white, lt grey or pinkish sole to the foot..last year a judge wrote on a jersey giant card ""wrong foot color"" the hen had white sole and it should have been yellow or mustard color. they sometimes look like australorps when young but if decently fed they pass the australorps in size later on..jerseys always have that yellow foot color.
looks like a cockeral to me.

That's what I was thinking too, after doing some research. It is fine with me either way. I was getting BAs because they were so good at laying eggs. JGs, from what I read are not as good at laying, but I like their giantness. I do however hope that it will lay eggs...(and not crow)

Hi All,
I'm trying, through a process of elimination, to figure out what breed this girl might be. I think she is now between 21 & 25 weeks, but don't know the hatch date. She hasn't started laying yet either. Her feet are yellow on the bottom. She's bigger than my EE -- feels pretty hefty when I pick her up.
When I bought her in May they said she was a Black Sex Link. Do you think she's a BA?

Whether yes or no I'd really like to know the reason for your answer whether it's coloring or whatever. Thanks!

Hi Carolyn,

I just replied to your first egg post. She is probably an Australorp but could be a Jersey Giant--They look a lot like Australorps.

Did you get her from a feed store? If so, probably not a Jersey Giant. Black Sex Links should have red in them some where and they look different as chicks.
Mine looked like this:

and now look like this:

And laid an egg like this two days ago:

Your chicken is close to laying an egg at that age. Mine will be 23 weeks old tomorrow.

I asked a similar question right above you. The answer I got was the yellow sole's = Jersey Giant. Def. looks like she's ready to lay soon.

I've only had hens in the past, the've never had brown that I noticed. I found a local breeder that I got my new babies from, and their Roos didnt seem to show any brown, but I really couldnt say for sure. It is interesting though, because some of the chicks I have had in the past appeared to have some brown fluff on their head, but it always went away, and they were only hens. Maybe one of the experts here will chime in.
